Not sure if anyone else listened to this today, but they had someone from some sort of clean air campaign talking (quite sensibly) about the 3 main types of pollution - nitrogen dioxide and particulates from diesel engines and also low level ozone. They were specifically fingering diesel pollution from commercial vehicles and private cars as being very bad news from a respiratory health point of view.
This conversation then switched seamlessly to some anus who said they were solving the problem with "low carbon zones" and getting "high carbon vehicles off the road"

tload more NO2 and particulates then a guzzly petrol car with higher CO2.I used to follow the diesel/air quality thing very closely, but don't any more.
The one big thing that came across is that here in the UK we were/are lied to very badly. I really had my eyes opened by how the media - mainstream, broadsheet and radio 4 type-media, were in on all the lies. It was quite shocking.
If the Radio 5 prog didn't mention stuff like the very real problem of benzene in petrol, that petrol engined particulates are more numerous, remain airborne longer and penetrate the lungs more deeply, and that petrol engines are massively polluting when cold (ie when they start up outside homes and schools etc) then it sounds like the massive misinformation is still going on.
The UK is one of the very few globally, and possibly the only European country, that charges more for derv than petrol. That blatant and artificial rigging of the market has got to be kept up somehow.
