Photoshop help needed please

I'm trying to do something that should be incredibly simple but can I do it? Can I feck. 
So I'm hoping a kind PHer will tell me how to do what I want to do.
1 - I want to specify an image size, say 500px x 100px.
2 - Into this I type some words.
3 - I then want the background to be a gradient that fades from a colour I specify at one end to transparent at the other.
This is so I can then put this element on top of a picture which then shows through the tranparent parts.
Help for step 3 is humbly requested.

I don't use PS often enough to know accurately each step off by heart, but for No.1, if you click 'File' -> 'New' then it should ask you for dimensions (changeable between pixels or cm etc) when creating a new image file So I'm hoping a kind PHer will tell me how to do what I want to do.

Regarding No.2, isn't that just the text tool on the left hand tool bar?
File > New will setup a new canvas, or Image > Canvas Size to edit an existing one.
I'd start with the backgroup image you want the gradient over, add a new layer then use the gradient tool.
Hard to talk you though it all though? have you looked for tutorials online? i know there are a few good sites around just cant recall them...

For 1 & 2, as already said.
New canvas at target size.
Select type tool and type required line
Make new layer and depending on colour combination, leave on top of type layer or drag below.
Select the gradient colour and then the gradient tool in the toolbox.
In the gradient tool options, select colour to transparent (checker board) and drag the gradient tool in the desired direction. Holding shift down while doing this constrains the direction.
This should work. Failing that, PM the brief and I'll try to do it for you.
