One does you harm the other good

Why then do people keep on gesticulating at the ANPR vans?

All that happens is a car / bike pulls you - you get arrested under sec4a POA and then charged or ticketed for £80

Not worth it and waisting the officers time

Tip - leave the vans to catch the no ins - disq drivers etc - the ones you want them to catch

How many normal members of the public have even heard of an ANPR yet alone know what it does ?

Most seem to think VAN + CAMERA = SCAMERA and give it the totally deserved sign.

Lack of knowledge could be the problem here, ANPR around here at least isnt trumpeted much at all by the police even though its used a lot.

outlaw.

If they're a pensioner who is travelling at under the speed limit, they'd better not give any signs - Streaky

Very true. You would think the police would understand this and mark up tha ANPR vans so that it was obvious what they were!

Especially as the police must surely realise how much bad publicity the scamera vans are causing - surely its in the polices best interests to distinguish themselves from the scamera partnerships??

Just a suggestion.....

If thats the case why does the officer bother pulling the person over? underfunded, underresourced police an all that..

ANPR's near me are totally unmarked infact they use a Freelander and a Voyager with windows blacked out (IMO beyond the level that is legal by the way)

Ones around here usually have one of those little foldy signs "DVLA Road Tax check" or similar

When ANPR first appeared here the WAS a sign a hundred years or so in front of it, hand written saying "This is NOT a speed camera".

I only saw it once, presumably the people operating it were told to remove it.

Ive seen one elsewhere with "DVLA Checks in progress" or something similar whoever the vast majority of them have no signing causing the panic brakes and mistaking them for speed cameras.

ANPR and the DVLA vans are different.

The ANPR will be staffed by police officers and there'll be a collection of BiB futher down the road to stop any cars who's registration marks have made a 'hit'.

The DVLA vans are staffed by DVLA members and they don't get out. The information is later downloaded and the necessary letters/summons etc sent out

Strangely enough, our ANPR vans/cars now have spiffy "ANPR" and "Denying criminals the use of our roads" ( ) stickers on to differentiate between ANPR and speed cameras...

The new "livery" came in just after the CC changed the speed enforcement policy, obviously just a coincidence.

All of our Traffic Cars have ANPR fitted. As we are all aware, its a superb piece of kit.

Saw one on the A519 (or 517) on Tuesday. It had a foldy sign but what looked like LOTS of very small text that was unreadable unless you were right next to it.

We had just passed two scamera vans (parked next to each other!) and the ANPR was immediately after it. The driver of the car I was in braked but I said "relax, unless your tax/insurance/keeper isn't up to date"

He replied "That's ok, the number plate doesn't belong on this car"

Only kidding, I said "I bet there is a shedload of cops in a layby just down the road", and yes there were some roadworks signs, narrowing to a single lane and a LOT of cars an lorries in a large layby being questioned by a lot of police.

It wouldn't waste the officer's time if they weren't so damn touchy
