Are The 2002 on E Class Reliable / Non Rusty ?
Discussion
They don't rust to any great degree no - and they are very reliable. There are a couple of well known issues - the front springs will break at some point, and there is a radiator issue (well documented on here - search 'Valeo').
They're a great buy - although I would counsel getting a 270CDi if you can locate a good one - much quicker than a 220 and very similar mpg. I got over 700 miles to a tank (80 litres) from my E270, and it was the quitest, most comfortable car I have ever had. I loved it - only sold it to buy an E55.

Its a car (in estate form) I would love to have one day but probably either the 270 or 320.
The 220 always strikes me as being a bit weedy with 150 & 251 torques in something with a max weight of 2.1 tonnes!
Just looked on Atrader and the 270 has 18% more power & 20% more torques.
They are about £500 more to buy. The 320 is probably £500 more again.

The 210 made way to the 211 in 2002. The 211 was subsequently facelifted in 2005 (IIRC)
The 210 has a poor reputation for rust. The 211's are far better in this regard and were part-galvanised from the off, fully galvanised but the time they were facelifted.
The late, pre-facelift 211's started to benefit from a host of improvements (eg they reverted to hand-fitted looms rather than robot-fitted ones).
The facelift 211's then had another round of under-the-cover improvements. The most obvious ones being the engines. The diesel multi's went from being inline 6's to V6's and are reportedly far smoother, more powerful and more economical.
I have a late pre-facelift E500 with stacks of kit. It's on 103k now and everything works just fine. It feels very well built to me.
If you are looking at diesels why not see if you can get one of the smaller multi? The 270 was a 5 cyl, the 280 is a V6. The only one I have tried is the 280. I'm not a big fan of diesels but I was impressed.

I was looking at these recently and opinion seemed to be that they were vastly improved in 2006, and you can tell the improved ones from the pre-improvement ones because they've got three "louvres" on the headlights. I think it was electrical gremlins being sorted out, if I recall correctly.
