PistonHeads Tours Return for 2012

Petrolhead Nirvana are almost ready to release the new tours for 2012, make sure you join us.

Winter may well be just around the corner, but the folk at Petrolhead Nirvana have given us something to look forward to. Over the coming days and weeks we’ll be launching the PistonHeads tours for 2012, with trips to Scotland, America and a couple of European jaunts on the horizon.

If you’re a PH tour veteran, no introduction is necessary (just a credit card to secure one of the limited spaces, ahem). For tour virgins, be assured that the PN crew have put together a range of trips that will mean your biggest problem is choosing which ones to go on, and that’s before you start talking your boss into giving you more holiday time.

Arranging tours might seem simple, but it’s not just a case of drawing a line on a map, finding a few hotels and setting off. Well, you can do it that way, but the chances are you will miss out on something special or find yourself sitting in a large traffic jam; or, worse, end up in a hotel where you’re worrying about where you’ve parked your pride and joy.

PN & PH take the stress out of all that by choosing hotels that fit in with the style of the tour and take car safety seriously. Then, using all their knowledge, they select the optimum roads to make sure you get to enjoy them all (that's PN, not the hotels...). After that, they work out how many miles iit is comfortable to do each day, based on the terrain – the last thing you want is a hard daily slog when on tour.

This year, all PHers on tour with us will be given a TomTom complete with all the routes pre-loaded - and that means no more map reading. In addition, every car gets a powerful walkie-talkie to keep in touch with the other cars and a driver's pack is included as a back-up with all the maps, directions and contact details, should you need them.

To keep things enjoyable on the road, PN provides a car to lead the group, but more importantly there is also a ‘chase’ car to cater for those who want to take things a bit slower or need help along the way.

PistonHeads tours are open to all and the most important rule we state (apart from the more obvious safety related ones) is ‘no egos allowed’. It doesn’t matter if you drive a Veyron or a Vectra, we’ll look after everyone equally and the aim is to have an enjoyable tour. It’s important to us that everyone feels included and PN agrees; with that in mind we limit the number of cars to 20 on each trip to help ensure all attendees feel part of the group.

Keep the tours in mind, as we’ll soon be announcing our first date; watch the homepage for more details.

"Arranging tours might seem simple, but it’s not just a case of drawing a line on a map, finding a few hotels and setting off."... nope, it's much easier to copy a route that someone else has already done.

Anyway, no European tours for me next year, did one in July - Dover to Calais ferry, down to Grenoble, Cannes, Nice, Monte Carlo, Stressa, Bormio, Stelvio pass, Davos, Strasbourg, Reims then home... mostly driven in a Diesel Astra as the F355 blew a hole in it's left cat about 60 miles south of Calais!!! Perhaps later I will post a picture of the poor thing on the side of the autoroute.

Anyway, I've never figured how the handbrake on the F355 works, which would not have been good on the Stelvio or an even steeper and narrower pass we found and it absolutely pissed it down on the Route Napoleon and a front wheel drive car with new tyres and ESP was a much better car for that leg, so all in all not such a bad thing!

The day and a bit delay of arranging the Ferrari to be towed and getting the hire car meant we were well behind schedule and saw bugger all of most places, however the driving was still really enjoyable and it's very liberating to drive through whole countries and see the scenery change. Best bit - Stelvio to Davos, the hairpins really open up when you get into Switzerland and you can have some fun, whatever car you manage to make it in!

I have now been on three tours with petrolhead nirvana all have been briliant and worth every penny (yes even the numerous pennies required for the viking tour). If you enjoy driving on excellent roads then you owe it to yourself to go on tour with PN.

The routes that PN come up with are truely fantastic and the tour manager makes the trips away into very special memories.

Al yes, the USA trip is actually £1,549pp before Xmas, includes the cars and accommodation but not the flights (as we find a lot of people like to add on a bit more time either at the start or the end of the trip so we made it more flexible)
