Hey guys, I need to replace the Gasket on the Head/Manifold, was wondering if anyone could offer advice on how to get the studs off without snapping.

Should I heat the engine up first or do it cold?

Its a Mk1 Focus

Cheers

Lots of plus gas 24 hours before hand and then again at 12 hours then again before you do the work. Impact gun would be best tool for this. Good luck and btw do not use WD40 it will do naff all.

If you use an impact gun on the manifold to head studs you will be drilling and tapping out broken studs for hours,
Use some penentrating fluid repeatedly over the course of 24 hours, obviously you will have to remove the heat shields first.
when you are ready to remove the manifold run the engine until the manifold is hot, five minutes should do,carefully loosen all the nuts with a socket or spanner, let the manifold cool, then carry on.

If the studs do come out with the nuts make sure you remove the nuts and wind the studs back fully into the head first, dont try to fit them back that way or they will grab going in then the nut will run down the stud making it look tight when in reality there are only 2 or 3 turns of the stud thread in the head.
