starting problem

i was out in the car over the weekend then it suddenly cut out.so got a nice tow home my first break down in the car turns out the earth was a touch slack and checked the battery condtion and said it was dead prob due loose connection!!
i got a shot of a spare battery to see if it would fire up and it did but was very smelly of fuel then cut out so not sur if coil packs are to blame. or the throttle pots that could be at fault what do you think of my problem guys all help will be great.how do i check coil packs and pots are working says i have fuel to and i put some in that day

i'd plug it into a computer and see if any faults are stored first, then fire it up and watch the screens, and or reset any faults and see if they come up again.

You have to take the top off the ECU, the connector is inside.
