Hi everyone,

As per the title can you recommend me some good Belgian and German beers? Really like Leffe and Hoegaarden. Any suggestions welcome.

Cheers.

If you like Hoegaarden you could try some of the German weissbiers such as Paulaner or Erdinger

Duvel is available in all the major supermarkets and is one of the all time classics. Chimay (a trappist beer brewed in Belgium by monks) is also commonly available and fantastic (there's Red, Blue and White, all great). Outside of the supermarkets if you go to a more specialised shop such as Utobeer there is a vast range to try (of both Belgian/German and British/American versions of the styles).

You may also find more German and Belgian style beers on draught (if your profile location is correct) from British breweries. Try looking for beers from Meantime, Camden Town or Lovibonds amongst others.

You'll have to go a long way to beat a properly served bottle of Schneider Weisse - absolute nectar.

Give us a clue what you like - there are around 800 belgian beers to choose from and they vary wildly from a light sort of quaffing beer (read as export strength uk beer), to real headbanger beers which are a little more 'treacly' wink

My personal favourites from the Belgian range would include:

Triple Karmeliet - A blonde beer with a nice full flavour, an almost bubble gum twang on the after taste.
Leffe - very normal and boring, but both the Blonde and the Bruin (white or brown) are a good bed with plenty of flavour and very little to offend! (The christmas variants are out at the moment and they add a little extra spice to the flavour lick
Chimay offer a small range of very palatable beers - I just bought a couple of the Blue (label) ones tonight which are dark again, but also a good balanced beer, slightly more bitter than the Leffe - but worth a bash and readily available to you UKites! wink
Troll - if you can get it, is a very nice blonde beer - a good mid strength again (around 7%) and has a full but refreshing flavour)

There are many more that I could mention but that should be a start for ya! beer

I spend quite a bit of time in Germany and I'm partial to Paulaner Hefeweiss Naturtrub.

Some favourites of mine:

Erdinger Dunkel (bit like Newkie Brown, but more cultured on the palate)
Leifmans Kriek (a Belgian cherry Lambic beer; dark, and quite sour but with a very lovely cherry (!!) flavour)
EKU28 Kulminator (careful with this at 12 volts per bottle; very "thick" but drinks and carries the alcohol much better than Banks' Barley Gold)
Rodenbach Grand Cru (very divisive, this one; a Belgian sour beer, dark, unusual flavour but - for me - extremely moreish)
Orval (similar to Duvel, a bit more difficult to find, but a bit lighter on the palate as well)

I'd also second some others that have been mentioned (Leffe / Chimay (all labels) / Duvel)

I can drink most things but I found that stuff awful. Smoked bacon - yes, smoked salmon - yes, smoked beer - no.

Sounds like the OP enjoys wheatbeers. If you can find it anywhere (I know a few bars in London are starting to sell it), try West Hefeweizen. It’s brewed up here in Glasgow at my local and they are the only brewery in the UK who stick to the ancient German brewing purity laws.

Orval is heaven in a class. Quite possibly a contender for the greatest beer in the world.

Asda near me quite often have Weihenstephaner Kristall Weissbier in stock. They only place I've seen Kristall for sale. If you've never had it before, Kristall is filtered wheatbeer (clear & looks like lager but tastes wheatbeer like and lots of bubbles). Lovely with a bit of lemon in.
Makro currently have Schofferhofer Hefeweizen which is pretty nice too. That's a cloudy one.

Edit to say - I also tried this recently:

which is amazing.

I like Warsteiner but I haven't seen it in shops over here. I think Lidl do some decent German beers though
