Reversing Light - Stopped Working!

Hello All,

I've had a sudden failure of my reversing light and wondered if someone can offer a few pointers.

Firstly, I have checked, and the bulb has NOT blown!

I had a few problems a few weeks ago with the lighting control box so I checked there first. There's no sign of any arcing on the contacts. I'm not even sure that the reversing light circuit goes through that box.

I also had the gearbox out a few months back, but I made sure the reversing switch plug went back in properly and it was cable tied firmly in place. The car has covered about 1000 miles since so I'm sure it would have fallen out sooner if it was going to be that.

Is there anything else obvious it could be?

Could be one of the wires going to the switch has come off or the switch itself is loose and has moved. Mine is out of alignment slightly so the reversing light only comes on if I hold the gearlever back when reversing, as soon as I let go the light goes out.

I believe also that the gear stick can be use to help with the alignment, under the gearstick gaitor at the back of the gearstick is a grub screw that can be loosened to allow the shaft to be rotated (see below)

It's a '97 R-reg 4.2 V8

In that case, firstly just check the connection at the reverse light switch on the gear box. If that is ok then bridge the 2 terminals on the wiring plug and then switch on the ignition and if it comes on then you know that all the wiring is ok in the car and if not then you will have to look at things in there. If it does come on and the wiring was connected properly then it is a very good chance that it is the switch. If you need a switch then it is just a ford sierra switch. I hope this helps.
