Just got an email from the Dvla that they are releasing this number plate in auction. Good plate but how much do you reckon it will go for?? 1k 5k 10k?? Especially if the other number plate companies get their hands on it and double / triple the price

I would say it's too car specific to be worth a fortune. Is anyone so excited by a BMW 1M that they'll spend thousands on it? It's not without value for sure, but I don't see it being huge.

And shouldn't this be in General Gassing?

I see this as a good plate for any serial M car buyer not just someone who currently has a 1M. It would be a good plate for BMW UK to own and put on the latest M press car. Similar to how Porsche GB own 911GB and keep it on the latest GT3/2 press cars.

Add in people who collect M cars etc. Maybe own M1s, £50k E30 M3s etc and this could easily be a £15k+ plate.

On a side note Daz, THE 911 is back up for sale again.

LHD. There is a very funny story on THE 911 plate. It was owned by a chap in Bristol in the early 80s. I'll tell you all about it at BTaP.

It's hard to say with private plates. There's been a few I've seen and thought that must be worth more than the car. There's an M3 CSL in Newcastle with the plate "M33 CSL" which I think look good.

I'm guessing £40k. Clash of two or more egos will send this soaring. Just a guess.

The funny element to the story is how the Bristol guy got the plate. Goes into a showroom in the 1980s and buys a used 911 turbo with the THE 911 plate, the sale was agreed on an "as seen" basis. Dispute afterwards as the showroom has tried selling the plate to another party. Legally the plate stayed with the car, so it's debatable if the chap from Bristol got the plate for nothing..... When he sold the turbo to another chap in Bristol he stuck the plate on a 205 1.9 GTI for a few years and eventually sold the plate with it going to someone in Scotland.

That it did.

It was sold in a liquidation sale from its Scottish owner about 4-5 years ago and has now re-surfaced.

what is 8MW though? It's a naff plate. Beneath the dignity of BMW.

I noticed that plate/car combination for a different reason. That being that it is on a standard M3 with CSL wheels fitted. The sunroof being the biggest give away.

BMW in Bracknell do own two BMW plates that they switch between various cars for different events.

I think they are BMW 5 and BMW 8.
But happy to be corrected.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if they put in a bid for that plate.
It'd be a good one for them to have as a company.

But, I wonder if they think it's worth chucking that much money at it.
I'm not sure the shareholders would be all that happy – I guess it depends on the final price.

As for 8MW, I can't imagine they would want that – it's just a bit naff.

I've only seen it in passing and not had a closer look but as it's the CSL silver colour, I presumed it was genuine. Can't say I noticed the sunroof!

If it's not real, is this the new way of convincing people that your car is better than it is? In the old days we used to put XR2 stickers on our 1.1L Fiesta's for that. Much cheaper ;-)

Aren't most BMW dealerships franchises, much competition, so I could see this possibly going for a tidy amount.

8MW would not be desirable as it would be displayed 8 MW, doesn't worksmile
