XTR Shifter help

Currently running XTR Shifters (970) 9 speed.
Left hand shifter (front Mech) drives an XT mech and swaps cogs over a race face crank with 3 speed chainrings (common size)
The left hand shifter has been dying for a while and last night gave up. I need a replacement. Can I use the new XTR shifters 980 10 speed to swap chanring cogs on a 9 speed system. As far as I can see, the offset between chainrings is the same. It is still a 3 chainring system...

No I cant!
XTR 10 speed shifter cant be used on a 9 speed xt Front mech. Too busy to answer why and I get the feeling it is the "Safe answer".
Ordered a 970's, left and right because they dont sell just left (NUTS) - anyone want to buy a XTR 970 right shifter - brand new?

It's to do with the cable pull ratio (I think, don't quote me)

All the Dyna-sys (10 spd) stuff uses a different pull ration, so you can't use 9 speed shifters with 10 spd mechs (front OR rear) and vice versa. This is all the way down to Deore Dyna-sys.

Are you using them for brakes or gears?
I'd return them - bloke I ride with had them, raved about them for about 2 months, then got rid as the noise was driving him (and us!) insane.I'll have a look.

I just use basic inners with decent quality full-lenth Shimano outer cable, and replace the inner fairly often. Works very well although that's partly down to them being full-lenth (continuous) and with those Middleburn cable oilers (search on CRC if you're not sure what they are).
Wish I could justify XTR! I spend the extra on XT shifters over SLX/etc as there's a definate difference in feel and performance, but for mechs/chainsets/etc I usually stick to SLX apart from cassettes.

The riding around here is very sandy and gritty, it eats bikes. I am forever trying to find a balance between performance and longevity. I have been using Jagwires for ages and they are brilliant for the price, I guess I fancied a change. The last ones have lasted about a year (Very good) but I clean them regularly. Oddly I think they have lasted so well because they are not full length. The only cables I really like are the Gore ones, yeah they cost a bomb for some wires but they really do work, and if your riding is done in sandy conditions they are completely sealed. Been running my recent set for a year now in some nasty mud and they still feel the same as when they went on the bike.If you are looking for a new XTR shifter (Right hand) I am sure we can come to a deal that would make crimbo a happy occasion! Treat the XTR shifters to the best cables
I could be interested in the R/H shifter, PM with how much, it might be a bit too close to christmas for me to justify spending on my bike though, hmmmm XTR is an addiction!
