Scanning old photos - good dpi

Hello again, I'm trying to scan in some old family pics. I'd like them to be OK up to A4 print size. What's the best dpi to scan versus time?
It's currently 1200 but it's taking about 5 minutes to scan!

300dpi should be fine.

What size are the originals? It's not possible to say what resolution the scans should be until you know how much they'll need to be enlarged.

Hello all, I went for 360dpi in the end (yeah, lmgtfy, etc )
They were ranging from polaroid to medium er, normal photograph size??.
Making a photobook so going to be a bit less than 10" x 8"
