Whoohoo, just agreed to buy a 964 C4 Cab from our friends at Prestige.

The car has an oil leak (surprise, surprise) but as part of the deal its being sent away to an independent (I think I can choose) specialist
to be completely (mechanically) fettled. This includes an engine (I think full) rebuild to sort out the oil leaks. The clutch was done I think about
10K miles ago, the flywheel has been upgraded, but otherwise all standard!

The questions I have are,

If the engine is out and stripped are there any mods I should consider that aren't tooooo expensive to upgrade performance and/or reliability?

Re-chipping/air filters etc?

Are there any independents in the Thames Valley/West London area that considered
particularly good?

I'm looking for a forward facing rear child seat (she's 18 months), I've heard the Porsche supplied Prince model fits are there any others?

Has anyone had the Xenon headlght upgrade? If so any good/how much/from where?

Forgive all the questions but I'm quite excited by this - 911s have been an icon of mine since I was a kid!

GT1 at Chertsey are good independents specialising in 911s. Near the station.

Personally I'd look at putting larger (17") alloys on, and then lowering. The handling difference is awesome, especially on the 964. At the same time, check the condition of the front wishbone bushes.

For power upgrades, most people go for a cat by-pass, cup pipe & a performnance chip (well I did). It makes a huge difference to the noise, and a reasonable performance hike. Budget about £1,200 from a specialist, using an OTS chip (mine's an AMD)

However, if you've not driven a car like this before, I'd suggest getting used to what you've got, and having a go in a car that's been mod'ed. The change in volume isn't everyone's taste, and you also have to consider that you won't get back what you paid when you sell it.

The other thing to look at is putting in an RS clutch & flywheel. Much better response when you're caining it, but can cause stalling on a cold day.

Gord welcome aboard.

In answer to your questions.

Specialist - try Northway in Reading or JZ Mechtech in Langley both are very good. - there are others - best get a copy of 911 and Porsche World. I doubt they mean a full re-build as your oil leak might be sorted by changing a hose or even tightening a nut!

Engine out. Just make sure they put it back with no oil leaks. Sound link you have most of the big stuff done already. As for most mods (cheap!) these can do applied without removing the engine. Suggest you investigate Cat By-pass + cup pipe, K&N/BMC filter and a chip upgrade or hot wire (AmD or 9M). Superchargers can be fitted for about £4000 for the mentalists. Its quick in standard guise so get use to it before taking it to 300 bph+

Child seats - get the Porsche one - you can use it until your nipper is about 35Kgs - buy secondhand on e-bay for between 50 -100quid.

HID upgrades are available - the one from Colin Belton (9m) seems about the best, however before spending £400, suggest you invest in some Phillips 50%+ or Super Osram bulbs - they do make a difference and cost about £20.

More words of wisdom.

Go to www.smartgroups.com/groups/964porsche and join the group. There are over 1500 of us sado's who can offer all sorts of advice, tips, etc.

Suggest you join the Porsche Club of GB - I most admit I had my doubts however 6 months on I'm very pleased I did - £55 quid well spent.

Finally there is a book by Adrian Streather called
Porsche 911 Enthusiast’s Companion Carrera 2, Carrera 4 and Turbo 1989-1994:“Auftragsnummer 964” buy it via Amazon.

This is not a Haynes Guide, but is the bible for most 964 owners. Adrian is also a member of the smartgroup.

Hope this helps.

Second GT1 -01932 569911 Craig or Peter -both ex-AFN and Ruf -mention my name.

KL Jeenay do a forward facing seat that fits EXACTLY into a 911/944 rear seat.

Have a look at www.porsche964.co.uk for more info; also www.p-car.com (apologies if URL not exactly correct.)

Rgds and have fun.

One thing to consider is that the independent may only fix what needs fixing to repair the oil leak. There's often a lot more bits that should be replaced at the same time (while the engine is stripped). I would recommend talking to the independent who is doing the work.

Another good forum is here www.rennlist.com there is a dedicated 964 forum.

I agree with Melv, try GT1 Chertsey, they have my car 993, at the moment then the 964`s going in, and while your there, look in at Roly`s garage [Eporsch] next door, specialist in 964`s
