Unreliable Fuel Gauge...

Hi All,
Really should get round to sorting this out... My fuel gauge goes all the way up when the tank is full but car runs out at about 3/4.......
Was told the car had a new sender fitted before I bought it but it did not make any difference....
Any ideas? are the gauges known to fail?
