Haven't seen a post on this yet, which surprises me!

Young Jobseekers being made to work for supermarkets for free.

Linky

Now, as most know I tend to be left-leaning but I've thought for a while that we should make jobseekers work part time while they find a job, learning skills for a trade or doing socially-relevant work (cleaning parks, working for charities etc).

I think the intentions are right, just how they've gone about it is wrong, we shouldn't be giving Tesco free labour (for example).

What say the PH collective?

litter picking is the best imo, cleans the streets + gives people a 'sense of community'

Tesco seems like an ideal place to put them if you ask me. The ones that don't care will end up stacking shelves there anyway and the others will think I'm not doing this st for the rest of my life and try harder. Win-win. smile

Quite right too. Why should they get free money?

True, but by the same token, why are we paying for Tesco's christmas staff?

Surely that should read "Young Jobseekers sent to obtain work experience"?

She's not working for free, she receives £53 a week. The fact that she also receives that money when she is sat on her arse doing nothing is a fault with the system.

Is this actually valuable work experience for the job-seeker or a cynical way to get some free labour? I'd say mostly the latter. Welcome to the new world of unemployment, unpaid labour and unpaid internships...

How are we paying for it? Before the scheme existed they'd get JSA anyway, now they have to go out into the real world and actually work to get it.

Option 1: We pay them dole and they do what they like.

Option 2: We pay them dole and they stack shelves.

I prefer option 2 on the basis that it's more important to me that they do something for their money than it is that Tesco gets a little benefit.

Isn't there any coal to dig, or chimneys to sweep?

Wrong, it sends a very powerful message, either train and gain skills or face working in Tesco for little money, rather than sat on arse getting pissed and playing games. It's a little like YTS.

I agree with point 2, they should be doing something. I just question the 'what'.

I don't think them doing something like stacking shelves is of any use to us as a society, and i'm sure as eggs is eggs the sort of person on JSA isn't going to be motivated by this, they'll see it as punishment and resit, as soon as they get the chance they'll be looking for hand-outs again, you need to install a sense of worth, pride and get up and go in these people, making them work for Tesco isn't going to do that IMHO.

Somebody has to work for Tesco - should the long term unemployed think themselves above supermarket work?

Agree, but it sticks in my throat that Tesco etc are getting free labour.

What he said!! ^^^

It should be a requirement for JSA or any other "I'm out of work so pay me sumfink" benefit that you (and I include me in this BTW) have to DO something to "earn" the publics money ('cos it IS out money, not the Governments money), and if that means stacking shelves, sweeping pavements, mowing grass, clearing weeds or clearing graffiti at a level equivalent to the minimum wage, then off you bloody well go!

if there is a job that needs doing - such as stacking shelves - then people should be paid the going rate for doing it

It's not a case of being 'above' supermarket work, it's just pointless to the general tax payer who is essentially paying these wages.

Why am i paying tax so Tesco can get cheap labour? My windows haven't been cleaned in months, make them do that.
