Hello.

I've been hankering after a barge of waft-esque ability, you know?

Something to cruise up and down the country in, surrounded by leather and air-con and special buttons. Etc.

But the last few years (plus most of the time when the weather is foul) I've realised I massively miss my old rattly 4x4 to plough up ice covered lanes and through slurry fields.

So...

I was wondering...

If you wanted to combine motorway wafting ability with ACTUAL snow and ice and mud performance....IN ONE VEHICLE what would you pick?

Gotta be cheap, gotta be under £5000.

Ideas?

A Cherokee of some kind?

Enough cow for even the most rabid leatherman. Goes offroad easily, pretty much indestructable in some formats.

Either an A8 / S8 or a Grand Cherokee, depending on whether waft or wade is most important.

A lot of car for the money. High miles but just run in for a Subaru.

Granted not barge like compared to an old Merc or suchlike, it is a good compromise with four wheel drive.

WJ (99-04) Grand Cherokee, leather armchair which is happy doing motorway miles or playing in the mud. Mine has done 75k miles in the last 2 years and is at 225k miles in total, no breakdowns so far (oh dear, said it now) You can get good ones from £2000, stick LPG on it for another grand, jobs a good-un. Avoid the diesels though, and if going LPG stick with the 4l straight 6, v8s have head issues on LPG

Correct me if I'm being Naive, but could you make one sound like a 911 with the correct exhaust? What's the tax like. I imagine that's the killer for most people.

Leather, wood, 7 seats, genuine off road ability, I'd have it if I had £5k burning a hole in my pocket, only run in at 50-odd thousand miles.

I give you the LWB Nissan Patrol http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/3385097.htm
