Hi guys, how hard is it to drop the rear diff? I did a full bodyoff a couple of years ago so all the bolts are new and easy to remove. The diff mounts are all polybushed so again no problems there, its just physically trying to remove it with the car just on axle stands, and access to the bolts etc.
2 years ago i wasnt 100 per cent happy with the bolts on the rear diff mounting plate, or to be more specific the threads in the rear diff cover for 2 of the bolts, but with a bit of threadlock i thought all would be ok.....WRONG....banghead
Doing a partial rear suspension strip now to renew the arb plates, i checked the above, all four bolts were loose, and only 2 can be tightened, the other 2 have stripped threads within the cover so i need to drop the diff to replace the rear cover.
You could feel the diff moving or knocking when you engaged first gear and moved off, so i knew something wasnt quite right.

I managed to remove the diff today and it wasnt to difficult but I think it will be more of a struggle putting it back.
3 questions-
1st.... what is best to use when refitting the rear diff cover plate? There was no gasket just remnants of what was either blue hylomar or some type of blue silicone jointing compound.

2nd...What is the recommended oil for the diff?

3rd..What is the best/stongest type of thread lock?

thanks Tom.

Make sure the rear bracket is secure by threadlocking and torquing the four cap bolts.

These often come loose and are pretty impossible to secure in situ.

Q2: handbook states Mobil SHC 80W 140ID (1.6 litres) but rare to find this these days. I would suggest any good quality high pressure 80W diff oil will suit.

Q3: Do you mean thread lock compound? Have a look at http://www.loctite.co.uk/cps/rde/xchg/henkel_uke/h...

Just a suggestion,

Instead of threadlocking the bolts could you drill and lockwire them?

Cheers,

Anyone know why. Probably some valuable info lost there.
