Insurance for Chimaera - with a twist

Anyone know who could provide liability insurance for the Chimaera being shipped over to Canada in a shipping container?

The shipping company advises me that I am required to have liability insurance for the car in addition to their insurance for the container shipment. This is to cover, I have been told "in case something happens if the car is off loaded by customs; in case of damage or injury to a third party - our insurance does not cover against this risk. For example, if while in the care of Customs the car rolls into a wall, Customs would not accept liability for damage to the vehicle or the building and the Marine Insurance would not cover this either".

Could anyone recommend an insurance company that could provide such insurance (assume for UK and Canadian customs inspections). Not looking for driving insurance. I have tried two big UK insurers with the standard reply that they don't do this kind of insurance. You would of thought that the shipping compnay could help - NOPE!

Forget the fact that it's a car, this is just a regular shipping policy.

I can't remember the name of the broker I used but if you google it, you should find something. Mind you, I would have expected your shipping company to at least have a couple of contacts for you.

So basically you are being asked to insure negligent customs officers and damage that your car may cause to property or person under their control? The Marine Insurance WOULD cover damage to your car only. The liability of the Customs officers SHOULD be covered under a Government indemnity scheme, however I cant guarantee this. I would suggest that you speak to the Customs of the country of import.Its not something that I would get involved in and I have spoken to our Hull and Port Liability Underwriters who say the same. IMHO the chance that you woud be personnally liable is very small as you could not be responsible for something that is completely outside your control. Please check!
Re the insurance fo your car itself, please be very careful with the shipper supplied insurance as they will limit thier liability to a monetary amount by WEIGHT! If you want peace of mind all risk agreed value cover then let me know and I can put you in touch with a broker who can sort this for you.
