A couple of years or so ago, we bought some decent Halfords extra bright +50% bulbs for about £19 and they made a big difference in the Citroen my wife had and also in her Freelander.

Well my Vivaro van lights are a bit dim so I popped in tonight to buy a pair for that.

Now they are £30 ..........EACH!!!

And if I was inept enough to have to get them to fit them, it would cost me another £6.99 per side.

Christ on a bike - that is some rip off!

Needless to say, these mass produced but highly over priced items remain hanging on their well stocked rack.

Just rejoice at this news.
The OEM bulbs and ballasts for my Chry 300C are nearly $300 each.

Yup. Get on tinternet. Halfords are handy for some stuff but things like this (potential impulse emergency buys) they suck pricewise.

That's pretty good. My Mondeo bulbs were around £70 each, ballast around £430 each.

Made a balls of fitting a headlight bulb to my pug207 and lost the retaining spring. So there am I thinking that will cost me £2 for a new spring.

That will £210.00 sir from the garage parts dept. WHAT!!!!!! says I.

You have to buy the whole unit it seems but nobody is telling me they don't have a few kicking around.

That fitting price seems an absolute bargain, my old ibiza cupra saw me battling for about an hour per bulb as the engine and related gubbins were taking up all the space. I could see how to get the bulb out and had unsealed it but didn't have enough room to do it!

Halfords will have a "do not attempt" list of certain cars, as trying to do it in a lot of modern cars is a joke. I have been told that the Modus requires the front bumper to be removed first! But hey, at least it has a 5 star NCAP rating......

Irony is that france and germany forced in laws to make the carrying of spare bulbs compulsary, then design cars which you need full worshop facilities and 3 hours in which to do it.

Most people in the UK don't keep spares, so are in rather more urgent need of one than mail order can provide. smile

The price of bulbs at Halfords without a trade card are a joke. Don't pay them.

Always amazed me that biggrin

I recall buying spare headlihgt bulbs for my S2 Elise when doing a European trip - to simply be covered. If a light did go, it's wheel off, headlight out job to change!

I'm 99% sure that it’s a legal requirement for new cars to have access to replace bulbs by the owner. This doesn’t mean they have to make it obvious or simple.

When I was working on headlamps for mclaren, there was very limited space to access and replace the bulb, and there was a lot of discussion if it met EU regulations and would actually be legal for sale.

My spare ("E" marked and retrofitted the day before tha M.O.T) bulbs went back in the boot. If you don't carry spares why moan about the price of bulbs in the shop? It's supply and demand, think of it as idiot tax. wink

Mk 4 Golf on this list apparently - according to the YTS teenager I spoke to its engine out, and entry has to be made through the exhaust pipe wearing full CBRN and body armour. (Its not really - more of bumper off)

However, i simply did it by going in the back of the headlight unit. And I have fingers like , erm really big fingers!
