Classic insurance on main car
Discussion
Just got my insurance renewal quote, gone up of course over a £100 from last year for no apparent reason My car is 17 years old so qualifies for classic status but most companies ringing 'round want it to be 2nd car/limited miles/wrapped in bubble wrap overnight etc... anyone managed to get a 10000 miles or more only car policy on a classic?
Have you tried Flux? the pretty much make up a policy to suit you my mx5 was limited to 3000 miles I don't think they asked if it was my only car or one of three. Obviously this was too few miles so I can simply buy more miles 5000 costs more 7500 more again so I dont see why you cant ask for 10,000?
I have 3 classics on one policy, all unlimited milage. I do have an everyday car as well though. I use http://www.peterjamesinsurance.co.uk/
Just because your car is 17 years old does not a) make it a classic and b) qualify you for a classic policy. Classic insurers are very picky about exactly which make and model of car they are going to cover and how it is going to be used - i.e. 2nd car, garaged, member of car club, limited miles etc.
I don't know what car you have so cannot comment on point a) but it doesn't appear that you meet any of the criteria on point b) so as has been suggested, you should ring round and see what can be done, but it's going to be on a private car policy.
BTW - the irony with point a) is that you can get a classic policy on certain modern vehicles e.g. MX5, Boxters, Z4's etc - that is completely down to how they are used, as per point b).

I had my MGB insured through Lancaster as a daily driver, kept on the drive, with unlimited mileage.
+1my old bmw e28 was used as my only car and was insured [and fully declared] with lancaster. cheap, but you don't accumulate NCB.

Exactly this just renewed my insurance on my 1999 Mini some insurers wouldn't class it as a classic but some do most classic policies are limited to a maximum of 5/6000 miles pa Both of my Minis are now insured with Flux my 69 MKII is limited to 3000 miles and cost abnout £100 agreed value of £2500 and my 99 Downton (1 of 5 so pretty rare) limited to 5000 miles agreed value of £15000 (yes you read it right) just over £250 pa both wiht my younger brother as a named driver with 1 fault accicdent to his nameI don't know what car you have so cannot comment on point a) but it doesn't appear that you meet any of the criteria on point b) so as has been suggested, you should ring round and see what can be done, but it's going to be on a private car policy.
