Hi all

Today I had my Pheonix serviced and 4 new tyres fitted at Seafield Services in Edinburgh (seems to be the best regarded garage in the city). Picked it up about an hour ago and noticed a small 2/3" chip on the rim of each alloy. I mentioned it to the mechanic and he said to come back tomorrow in the daylight and he'd take a look, although he did say that their machine is designed to protect alloys.

The chips aren't significant - they don't get down to the metal the way proper kerb shunts do, and they look very shallow - sort of like when you pull away the shell of an egg and can see the white membrane below. So it's only the outer, silver metallic surface that's fallen away - maybe it's just paint that's come off?

Despite that, it's really annoying because I know for a fact that the wheels were in *perfect* condition this morning before I took it in - I even took a photo of each wheel because I thought this might happen. What's more, the previous owner spent £££ getting the wheels stripped and re-powder coated, and I took great care to make sure I didn't kerb them (which I've never done).

I'm going to take it back tomorrow and see what he says.

What do you guys think?

I'm no perfectionst but that is unacceptable. I hope you can get them to admit fault. They should compensate you. Amateurs surely they are aware of the value of alloys these days? Sorry for your predicament.

Most tyre places have a sign somewhere saying don't come crying to us if your delicate alloy chips or words to that effect.
My MX5's aftermarket alloys are v kerbed so i probably wouldnt notice, but i did on my 944 a few years back and they touched it up as it was a small mark.

They should take care and sort it out which needn't be really expensive with the mobile dent/chip guys.

Thanks for your replies guys.

I took it back yesterday and showed him the chips, and they didn't really argue - after a bit of chat he said he'd call me with a slot to get them repainted(!). I asked if touching them up would be enough and he said it wouldn't look good, so the rim would need repainting, which is fine by me. It'll need an overnight though to let the paint harden before putting the rubber back on, although that doesn't bother me much.

In other news, I found a scratch along the driver's side (and a v small dent) which weren't there before either (although I can't be sure that was the garage), but I'm not going to query that because I suppose that's life.

Sigh, if only people would take as good care of others' things as they do of their own!
