Hi guys...

Preparing to start writing my thesis at uni and I am stuck on wording a question for it...I'm studying graphic design, but the thesis is on drag racing, but I need to somehow make a connection between the two. Obviously because I own PWRD a good starting point would be motorsports marketing/design etc.

My thoughts at the moment are something to compare the differences between a sponsorship design on a race vehicle and a 'personal' design. Talking about key points such as car names, colours and iconic styles etc.

But I am just stuck on how to word a question, and what I actually want to answer?

Any thoughts would be excellent
Thanks
Pete

What has your dissertation advisor suggested?

Distilling a question can be hard, have you tried starting your sentence with "I believe that professional race cars need to......" (or something along those lines) that may help you focus your mind smile

how about the impact of livery design/ logos/ teamwear when marketing products/advdertising sponsors. you could look at the difference that different logos/colours/designs have on people and how certian products/ sponsors have to be advertised differently through different designs etc....also the long terms impact of designs such as the gulf livery/ number 3 in nascar etc.....take a look at nascar/f1/nhra and there are loads of great examples

I would look into sponsor placement.

Some sponsors demand where the logo should be placed, be worth researching why.

Further to Dan's suggestion on logo placement I would also look at the application of corporate graphic standards to paintscheme design, how they can be applied and how actually very often they shouldn't be applied and the reasons why. Subects such as colour, distortion, white-space, background and placement can all be discussed. How working strictly within corporate graphic standards may have a negative effect on brand recognition in our world. How audience expectation and comparable visual impact effects the design process and how from a marketing perspective the desire to connect with the specific audience is often more important to a corporate than their own graphic standards manual and in-house art department.

Sam Bass has a lot of interesting stuff to say on the subject.
