Seems like a lot of cost and fuss over a few deaths, in reverse.
Let's not even talk about deaths going FORWARDS!

If cars were invented today, they would certainly be banned, or only professional drivers would be allowed to operate them.

Sad story but another pass the buck I can't take the blame for my actions mother. How about those things called mirrors? Or that thing between your head and shoulders that allows your head to rotate and pivot?

Were the words "If it saves one life..." used at all?

Women’s propensity to reverse cars into things never ceases to amaze me, especially as I grew up being warned by them (teachers and my mother) that they have eyes in the backs of their heads.

Bakcup camera – seems a bit over the top.
But, some sort of reverse beeper is a good idea.

I'm not really trying to have a go at the mother.
But, if you know you have a loose child in the area, I know that you drive incredibly slowly – and you make sure that the child is in your eyeline at all times.

I've been known to make my nephews stand off to the side of my old van as I reversed it so I knew where they were because the rear visibility was so bad.

If we made all cars have three foot of memory foam taped to the bumpers, that would stop such accidents too.

I watched my wife (now ex) back our Discovery into another car even though the parking sensors were flat-lining.

Her perception of her surroundings was amazingly lacking for a clever woman and the reason why my Beemer is covered in bumps, scratches and dents.

I don't think a camera would have stopped her.

Whenever I reverse out of a space, especially when I know children are around, I travel at a speed that if someone was hidden behind me, they would just get a bit of a bump.

I was not a witness to this poor woman's accident but I would bet she shoved the thing into reverse and stomped on the gas.

Shocked to hear that this is not an isolated incident.

BTW there are plenty of idiot bloke drivers on the road before I get flamed.

Sad story but Darwins Theory will always find a way.

How about a law to stop stupid folk from breeding instead?

It's the way of the world I'm afraid. The gradual dumbing down of everything.
Here's an idea, why not bring the retards up to the level of the majority rather than waste money we don't have on the reverse.
Harsh I know, but was she prosecuted for death by dangerous/careless driving?

Maybe if she had a normal car she would have seen him.
Instead the biggest slab of metal she could find because little Timmy and Tilly wont be safe in anything smaller.

yes As with ESP et al, something that is 'needed' because of unfit-for-purpose basic designs will be made mandatory for all - and no one ever asks whether we can or want to afford it all....

Ah, so because she needs them she is demanding everyone else is forced to have them. Great.

Even with cameras fitted, people will still hit things. They'll probably clatter the front end as it swings around as that obstacle wasn't on TV!

Sorry to hear about the childs death, accidents do happen, especially it seems to those famed for being able to multi-task.

I want to see the stats for people reversing over others in the US and then the UK. Is it really that high a percentage. or is it however sad but a 'freak accident'.

"I thought he was in the car. He'd never opened the door before."

1. Child locks disengaged.
2. 19 month old not fastened in to car seat.

Sounds like an avoidable accident to me, not something that needs far reaching legislative changes.

I'm not clicking a video link, and as the OP couldn't put any more detail into his post I'll assume from the rest of the posts that someone reversed over their kid.

I've heard of several of these incidents over the years(including plenty of blokes, so let's knock the bks about women drivers on the head).

It seems like one area where the legal requirement for reverse radar would be a beneficial thing. You can be as carefull as possible, but still get caught by that one-in-a-million event with tragic results. The usual scenario seems to be - Dad leaves for work, kid crawls out through front door, dad reverses over kid. Game over.

Remember the 'pointless technology thread?: http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...

Maybe the simple reversing/parking sensors are not such 'pointless technology' - although as the more belligerent PH'er will point out.....

yonex said:

Parking sensors - for those that have purchased huge cars that they cant really drive very well, if you're not aware of a child around your car at any point then you shouldn't be on the road.

Children have minds of their own. I would rather hear a beep that one has run behind me out of sight that hit him/her.
Shame some adults dont. How many times has this system saved you from running people over exactly? Can you really not see around your car, perhaps you should buy something more suitable?
Had this pointless technology, that comes free on a lot of cars, been fitted to this woman's car, her child might have been saved.

For anyone who has a child, just imagine it..... Makes me want to vomit.

I think you are possibly blind. Generally speaking the worst cases of bad & piss poor driving I see daily is performed by women, usually in people carriers with kids in them.

It's not the usual scenario. If I've listened to her correctly, she thought both children were in the car.
