Merc E55K AMG too much of a monster for a family car?
Discussion
I'm currently pondering over whether to purchase a BMW 545i or Mercedes E55K AMG as my next car. Although I suppose you could say they are quit different cars and the E55k is more in M5 territory, the planets have aligned in such a way that I have a choice of either car in a similar budget and insurance cost.
The car is going to be used mostly for transporting the family at weekends, with the occasional hoon around on my own during the week and at car events.
My main worry though is that the E55k with ~480bhp is going to be a bit of a handful/twitchy and constantly want to put me in a ditch. Whereas the 333bhp 545i might be a bit more practical?
Thoughts?

The 211 E55k is a doddle to drive fast or slow. Extremely comfortable, safe luxurious and more to the point, Special.
You wont regret it!
How ruinous to run, rusty etc?You wont regret it!
I love the idea of these (now that it seems 15K gets something reasonable) but thoughts of W210 body rot puts me off.

Cant speak for maint. costs, but the few I've seen have been fine as far as rust goes.I love the idea of these (now that it seems 15K gets something reasonable) but thoughts of W210 body rot puts me off.
Unlike the XJ 4.2 Supercharged I was looking into previously. Didn't see one that wasn't bubbling under the paint on the doors and boot :/

Good luck with whatever you go for. I've driven a few of the W210s, can't imagine what another 120bhp feels like!
I'll let you know on sunday
I'm just after a reasonably priced car that will melt my face off when asked - and without having to dump my life savings into 'moddin' it.

Based on that you definately need the E55 then. As stated by an earlier poster its a throttle pedal, not an on-off switch. Treat it with respect and I reckon it will fulfill the brief better than the BMW and will certainly put more of a smile on your (melted) face.If you buy the BMW you will always lust after the E55, I don't think that's likely to happen in the opposite direction.

E55K, no question.
You (and anyone else who drives it) just have to be a little sensitive with the accelerator pedal. It will be a piece of piss to drive slowly/gently/smoothly and the autobox will keep revs well below 3000rpm when being gentle on the throttle. Then, if you want to unleash, watch things go feral above 4000rpm.

Do people like you, actually have a brain, or are you on here to get attention. Why would you ever seek the advice of the amoebas on here, on that sort of decision, between those two relative expensive cars. The car is going to be used mostly for transporting the family at weekends, with the occasional hoon around on my own during the week and at car events.

Yeah, and silly amounts of it too. Last one I looked at was on an 06 plate with 42k miles. Had corrosion at the bottom of all four doors and on the bootlid. I'd hate to see what it looks like after another 6 winters.
Good, I have some ammo, I'm going to forward this thread straight to some smug type ex -colleagues at Jag
