recomend a compact camera?

I’m wanting to buy a compact to use at such times when lugging my DSLR is impractical. It must take a photo when the shutter is pressed, now a few seconds later, and would prefer canon, but am open to other makes. Also does anyone use a tough compact, and do they sacrifice anything to be tough?

You don't mention a budget and getting the instant response of an SLR when you press the go button is always going to be compromised even with full manual control adopted.

However ...

If you have been following the thread at all recently you may have seen some shots posted by GetCarter taken with a Canon S95. Great results for a pocket sized device and a lot of control available if you want it. I picked up the previous model (S90) for £155 recently from the Canon Outlet refurb site on eBay. Availbility not guaranteed of course. They have had a few S95s from time to time, going for about £260 but that was before the new S100 was announced.

Cracking camera that gets about as close to dSLR controllability as a compact is likely to get.

I noticed that the currys eBay store had a s95 for £200 the other day. Seemed like a great price.

That is a good price, I paid £345 about 8 months ago. As mentioned S100 comes out Jan 1st.

To the OP, you'll never get *NO* shutter lag from a comapct... well not with the tech they use at the moment The S95 is about 1/2 second

Just noticed that my iphone had changed the word currys into citrus, god I love technology. To avoid confusion, here is the link. It's listed as used, which in my experience means that it is probably ex-display. I have bought cordless phones and a panasonic compact camera from them listed as used and other than the packaging clearly having been opened, they were both immaculate. A chance to save a few quid if you're as tight as me. They also have a new one listed at £270 ish.

Another recommendation for the S95, I think it's brilliant for when you can't or don't wanna carry anything else. I've been taking mine hillwalking instead of my slr because frankly, I'm not strong enough to carry anything else.

But the results have been easily good enough for me and I love the fact you can shoot in raw too, I'm getting real benefits in terms of being able to get some detail back in the highlights or shadows when I get it a little wrong.

I shoot the S90 as RAW + JPG.

It's interesting to compare the raw RAW file image with the jpg, especially at wide angle, to see how much in-camera lens correction is applied for compact lenses these days.

I've never tried that but Lightrooms built in lens profile for that camera does make quite a change from what I can remember.
