Fernies have this 56 reg car up for sale, but it has the higher speaker positions in the front door cards.

Is this an aftermarket fit, or possibly an earlier car that was registered later? As I understand it this position was used in the earlier cars, rather than down by the footwells in the later versions?

2004 car, or the owner fitted the front speakers themselves.

As far as I'm aware that was the standard factory fit front speaker upgrade. I wasn't aware they changed it to lower down as OEM though happy to be wrong. I have them on my car which is a late 54 build.

I've seen a number of late cars (including mine) with the speakers being low in the door 'bins' - always assumed that was the revised standard factory fit option?

Yes, they became std fitment in your car's position in very later 2004/early 2005. The higher up speakers in the first link were an option on cars before this cutover.
