I don't quite get the problem if I'm honest. Protesters won't leave, Dean calls Police, Police don't take any s
t and get rid of the protesters in what seems a reasonably non-violent way (it being the US and all that).

I'm a bit confused by your definition of non-violent. Pepper spray is an assualt and a rather serious one at that. If you try that on a member of the public then you are likely to be imprisoned for a first offence.I don't quite get the problem if I'm honest. If we leave the moral and legal side alone for the moment, what about the effect on those who see such violence being used on apparently passive demonstrators. Do you think it is likely to stop demonstrators attending or convince the waverers that they should actually do something?
The demonstrators now have a cause celebre. or rather a choice, there's the 84 year old granny as well.
the company i work for have their headquarters in Davis, so ive been there a few times..
You couldnt really get a more laid back town to be honest, very quiet place even with a huge uni campus there, hardly any problems so maybe the police were a bit excited to be donning the riot gear..

It's always nice to have some short video clips to stimulate debate..
although this isn't related directly to the University incident It is in my opinion a great little clip.

Although it's a terrible affront to civil liberties, the right to free assembly and expression etc, I really am enjoying those...although this isn't related directly to the University incident It is in my opinion a great little clip.

Derek, what would you suggest as a first resort when presumably "please" doesn't work?A PC who merely pushed a demonstrator is up for trial in this country.

At risk of turning this into a hippy bashing soft porn thread, this is fun

Aha, the old eye-gouging accident trick.
