Not for me, but for someone who has a pair of Vacuum Tube Logic 225w monoblocks (EL 34s) and matching VTL preamp, with Martin Logan Sequel II electrostatics at the front end. He's thought of Linn (Sondeck LP12) but isn't sure what's out there at the moment otherwise.

I know there is no substitute for listening and there is the law of diminishing returns but a few starters for ten would be good.

My thoughts were something along the lines of Michell Gyrodec/Orb, SME 10/20, Nottingham Analogue Spacedeck (if they are still around?) or Wilson Benesch Full Circle...

What say ye?

I love my Michell Engineering Gyro SE. Also been very impressed by the AVID range.

The choice is the problem!

Avid is one I know little about - so good call - I've a Gyrodec myself (first generation with the aluminium platter and a Well Tempered arm) and have no hesitation recommending one but wanted to hear of any ideas about similar products, particularly those that lend themselves well to the very powerful tube amps and very transparent electrostatic speakers - it'll probably come down to cartridge/arm choice as much as anything but a good but not outrageous turntable base is a good place to start.

Maybe it's much of a muchness - thanks all so far.

The RIAA stage will be as much part of the equation, as the turntable and arm/cartridge.
No idea what your budget is, but you may be able to pick up some bargains on the analogue front.

The LP12 used to be the benchmark

If he has any 12inch singles remember to check that the deck can do 45rpm
My RD80 only plays 45s by manually adjusting the belt and IIRC the Linn requires an adaptor fitted.

An LP12 is probably going to be a little too smooth when coupled with that rig - dependent on room dynamics and listening preferences of course.

An Avid or Michell would be a good start, though. Is there a budget in mind?

Another approach would be an old Garrard 301 or 401, if your friend is prepared to buy used, or even a Loricraft 501. In many respects contemporary technology for valve amplification, still very highly regarded. I also recall reading about highly modified NOS Technics SL1200s, although I'm afraid I can't remember where. Got a good write up though.

What is his budget? There are a lot of decks out there, if he wants to spend a lot of money then the SME 30 is hard to beat. Then for about £4k a Michell Orbe with a SME arm & a suitable catridge is superb. At the low end of "high end" there is the Funk Firm Vector, which you should be able to get for just under a grand complete with arm & cartridge. The Funk is made by the guy responsible for the Pink Triangle brand of turntables, & it really is a superb deck that out performs many much more expensive decks.

I have an SME 20 which I have had for 10 years and never seen the need to replace if that helps.
