My Golf mk5 GTI....

Afternoon,
Thoughts i'd share my new purchase with the masses, after insurance quotes and worries about the cost of running all checked out I went and bought this one. it's a 2007 GTI with DSG and after 500 miles, I love it.
I came to this from a Mk4 GTI anniversary (diesel) and a Clio 182 and it's worlds apart from both. It's 3dr DSG with Monza 2 wheels which were my "must haves" everything else was a bonus. The DSG is something I wasn't sure of but after speaking to people and having a look at a fair few I decided it was the option for me, having never had an automatic it took some getting used to and as my confidence builds with it it's a hoot. In D is gets to 6th for by the time you're doing 40 and makes covering miles an easy task, put it in manual or sport and i'll giggle like a kid at Christmas every time hear the little pop as you change up. I'm sat at work now looking at the keys wishing i had an excuse to nip out!!
As a side point I got 40mpg on a run the other day and 30mpg doing the weekend rounds, i wasnt expecting that to be honest.

Nice one. How does the box work, can you push the gearstick back and forwards for manual sequential gear selection or anything like that?
Always thought these were quite nice cars inside and the classic red GTI strip around the grill looks ace. They get criticised a lot for being competent but not involving, but I'd still love a go in one!

The old Leon Cupra R was using the 1.8L 20VT engine at 225bhp, a stage one remap would get them to about 242bhp, and a stage 2 map (supported by a cold air feed induction kit) would get to about 262bhp. I'd have imagined that the Mark5 GTI, at around 197bhp, with a simple stage one map could see 215 or evn 220bhp, and a stage 2 map with supporting mods possibly 240bhp. As such, when I had my Cupra R, I found that most owners just skipped stage one, since both maps (from REVO, a well rated VAG tuner) were £400 each, so most just saved time and money in the long run by going for the big one first. Just have to keep in mind that your fuel consumption will take a hit, don't you believe what they say about remaps being more economical, you have the power and you will use it!

The Cupra is on my list too,I remember the pics you posted of yours,very nice!
You've got an EP3 now havn't you?If it weren't for my GF wanting 5 doors,I'd have a premier edition over both the golf and the Cupra.I've just always been a Honda fan,but I guess Ill have to settle for a forced 250BHP

Yeah I've got an EP3 now - it is one of the least practical hatches you could find, the boot is tiny compared to the Cupra and the front seats reset their position every time you move them to let someone get in our out. Hence why passengers never move my seat, they have to get in the other side.The Cupra is on my list too,I remember the pics you posted of yours,very nice!

Very nice. When we return to the UK next May we're going to be getting one of these as a daily. They're just stonkingly good VFM.
I'll have to keep a close eye on the classifieds though, as i want everything - 5dr, white or blue, sub-40k, 18" Monza 2's, xenons, leather, multifunction steering wheel, cruise control and satnav. The Satnav is the only one i can do without as it can be retrofitted by these guys for £600.
I'm confident they're out there though, will just have to keep looking...

Yea it's paddles, stick (although It's push to change up and pull to change down, always thought it should be the other way) and then you have "normal" and sport automatic settings that you can override whenever with the paddles.Always thought these were quite nice cars inside and the classic red GTI strip around the grill looks ace. It gets left in automatic for 90% of the time tbh.

I must admit, i found that a little odd in my Ed30 - not sure if it can be re-programmed via VAGCOM or anything? I hear the steering assistance can be reduced as well, which would be a worthwhile tweak imho.Strangely, i didnt really like my old one, but now i feel drawn to them now i fancy something a little bit more 'ordinary'. Great all round cars, just not overly brilliant at anything.
