Seriously many thanks finally brought a bike today, its been a harder process than buying a car or motorcycle in my opinion.
I went to another dealers today (didn't go for the FS Giant after what you said Matt can't fork out £300 servicing bills on top of motorbikes and cars), anyhow cut a long story short they had a second hand 2007 Stumpjumper Comp with a few upgrades.
I wasn't going to go second hand but she looked mint took her for a ride and I prefer the feeling of the width a Specialized has over the Giant and GT.
It was up for £700 and I brought her for £600, if its not a deal then fair enough but currently i'm really pleased,I've since google'd it found a 21 inch frame one on e-bay no upgrades starting at £300 and another one for £700 on second hand bike web-site.
They've give me a verbal warranty, it was brought from them new in 2007 they owner part ex'd on a 29er (starting to learn some terms), I really could'nt wait any longer for the Giant (4 weeks) and really want to prep for my event in Jan.
Going to purchase helmet and order some lights tommorrow.

Stumpjumpers have always had good reviews, although I've never ridden one.
Seems like a fair price, although that would depend on what model you have bought.
Just bare in mind that any bike will suffer lots of wear if you complete a fair distance at Strathpuffer.

Ha ha not a Straphpuffer completed but got out for 3 hours, come back to the drive jumped off and as I went to wheel her round the back of the house I noticed the rear wheel was rubbing somewhere so I cleaned off the mud etc but the rear wheel was still sticking, not just a little bit either, so last night I took it back to the shop and they said it would be sorted for this afternoon.
Must confess I did start asking myself why did I buy a second hand bike when I was driving back to the shop, however I was well pleased when I was out and riding so hopefully they'll be no more problems.

There's nothing generically wrong with that bike - it's a really good one. I'm sure some tweaking here and there will resolve your current issues and it'll give you years of service.
People often say Specialized are like Fords, and they use that in a derrogatory manner. But I think it's high praise because they are not terribly expensive, they are well spec'd, and they are reliable. Some are properly quick and high spec'd too, a bit like the Ford GT I guess.

Thanks, I'm pleased with it, got it back earlier one if the pistons had cracked in the rear caliper, I now have a new caliper on the back.
I should have give it another week, I've messed my stitches up from my operation. Annoyed at myself but was desperate to get out, on the plus side have ordered my lights.
