996 GT2 Vs GT3 - real life experience
Discussion
It might be time to get back in to 911s after a few years in a Lotus Exige. I say might as I’m very happy with the Exige and wasn’t really thinking about change but I’ve always had a hankering for a 996 RS and decided to view a couple recently, which were sold before I could get to them.
It got me interested however and I’ve been looking a bit more actively. In doing so I’ve noticed how much of a bargain GT2s seem to be and test drove one today. The road conditions didn’t really allow me to stretch its legs, but my god they are fast.
I want something for fair-weather use, probably about 3,000 miles a year and am unlikely to do any track days. I‘d be interested to hear from anyone who’s covered a few miles in both a GT2 and GT3 and am particularly keen to hear how they differ in real life beyond the fact that the 2 is just bonkers when you those turbos spool up.
It’s all a bit different from 190 bhp and what feels like about 10ft/lb of torque!

For me and if there are no track days i would prefer the GT2
They are obviously rarer and bonkers quick so great for 3k PA hooning.
I also think they look awesome for a 996, aggressive and great road presence compared with a GT3.
Longterm residuals could be interesting as the GT2 is at it lowest value now and well worth investing in, i would say the values will go North without a doubt due to supply and demand.
Remember as has been mentioned on here some of the so called low mile cars maybe not be low miles so be careful, for 3k PA a leggy (70k +) 39-40k with low owners and good history/condition is a good place to have 40k in!!

I've had my GT2 for about 5 years now and done around 35k miles (was a daily driver for 4 years)
I've had the GT3RS since febraury and done about 3k miles.
There is no substitute for the raw power of the GT2, but the handling of the 'RS is simply sublime...such an easy/capable road car.
I test drove a 997GT2 at the weekend (a possible repacement for the 'RS) but it's just a bit too good...too clinical and less character than the 996 car....found myself thinking I couldn't really part with the 'RS.
In summary - both excellent cars and you won't be disappointed with either, but the power of the GT2 is addictive, and a rae/unique car for the money...you've just gotta find a good one!!!

996 RS is the only "good looking" 996 IMHO - must be an awesome NA drive!
It is out of this world!!!
Having said that I had a 996 GT3 (non RS) as well as they are equally as good to drive albeit with a touch (and a small one at that) less drama and focus.
As others have said the only way to judge is to test drive one. I previously had put down a deposit on a 7.2RS without driving and then returned for a test drive....long story short, deposit was withdrawn and a 996RS purchased instead. Another person may have come to a different conclusion after similar situation.
Any thoughts on this 997 GT2? It's been for sale for a while..

Still struggling a bit with this. The GT2 I'm looking at is lovely and with a strong history, however I wonder if might be better in a GT3, given its a bit closer to the Exige which I love driving.
This particular puzzle is getting hard to solve!

I think if you aren't planning lots of track work then the GT2 may be the better bet because of the grin factor when you get the turbos on song. They are also a bit more compliant on the suspension side, so better suited to road driving (in the UK at least). They are also rarer, and visually stunning.
On track the GT2 can get a tad hairy, and the GT3's smoother delivery, and overall poise, will probably give it the edge.
