A Porsche driver deliberately drove with a dog tied to the back of the car, Sussex Police have said.
Officers said the beagle-collie cross, suffered "horrific" injuries.
The black Carrera was seen at the Devil's Dyke car park near Brighton on Sunday at about 22:00 GMT, dragging the beagle-collie cross behind it.
The car was then spotted at 22:30 on the A27 still dragging the dog along before it pulled into a lay-by near the Southwick Tunnel.
Police have identified the dog but have been unable to speak to its owner.
PC Scott Walters said: "The injuries this dog suffered were horrific. It has been distressing for everyone involved."
Officers are appealing for any witnesses to come forward.

I don't have a dog. I have seen dogs tied to cars at campsites (can't tie them to the tent!) but can't really see why you would in reality. Just saying we don't know the whole story yet. Not saying that's what happened, just maybe a possibility.

I really dont know whats wrong with this country. How these vile people can be classed as human beings is beyond me. I saw the other day an article about a German Shepherd that had a firework put in its mouth and a then had its mouth taped shut. It didnt kill the dog but its injuries were so horrific that it had to be put down. Now, ive seen, in person, people and animals blown to bits by suicide bombers, IEDS and by ISAF actions but seeing that dogs injuries moved me more than anything else ive ever seen.

I wish they had named and shamed the kids who did it and hope they name and shame the guy who did this to the collie. No sympathy from me, only a vote for like-for-like punishment. Animals, just like young children are 100% innocent at all times and have no natural ability to offend or wrong us. Why is it that people (loosely used term) feel the need to do such horrible things?

Couldnt agree more. Totally cold sick people. It actually makes my stomach turn thinking of what the poor dog must have thought when started to drive off. I hope he gets a decent sentence but I bet he gets a community order or some sort of suspended sentence.

The Porsche driver faced threats of violence from animal lovers after the horrific story of the beagle-collie cross’s death broke. The dog was dragged along the A27 from Devil’s Dyke to Southwick behind the Porsche Carrera. After handing himself in to police, the father-of-three released a statement through his solicitor claiming he had been involved in a “terrible set of circumstances”. Forensic experts seized the Porsche and are currently analysing it to try and see if the dog could have become accidentally tangled in the engine. The 33-year-old Worthing man’s solicitor said his client was driving down a country road on his way home from London. He added: “The dog had got loose that afternoon while it was being taken for a walk and was in the middle of the road. “It was wearing a leash which extended several metres in length. “While he was driving past the leash became entangled in the exhaust system of the vehicle, dragging the dog behind him. “The driver was completely unaware of what had happened. "He stopped to check his car several times because he heard a sound and thought there might be something wrong with his brakes. He was bailed until December 14 while officers examine his car and try to establish the dog’s cause of death. A witness first reported seeing the Porsche with the dog chained to the back at the Devil’s Dyke car park at about 10pm on Sunday, November 20. At about 10.30pm, another witness was overtaken by the sports car as it dragged the animal through the Southwick Tunnel, before pulling in to a lay-by. The dog’s owners are thought not to even know that their pet has been killed.
