Private plate transfer after sale of car

Hi

Im selling my car but forgot to take the plate off the car. the car is going on wednesday to the new owner how do i go about getting my plate back off the car and putting the standard on back on?

You need to send all paper work off now, and hope the buyer will take the car with out the v5, then send it on to them when plate is sorted.

What's the value of the plate?

DVLA's view is that the plate goes with the car unless you've taken it off beforehand. But if you fill in the paperwork tomorrow to put the plate "on retention" you have to post your V5 off to DVLA and won't have anything to hand to the buyer. Takes about 3 weeks for the V5 to come back from DVLA....

So you have 2 choices,

1. Mess the buyer about, or
2. Do a short written agreement with the buyer saying he will remove the plate from the car and put it on retention with you named as "Nominee". The catch is, there's not much you can do if he doesn't do what he's promised.

Neither of these is ideal. Always best to get the plate off a car several weeks before advertising the car for sale.

Playing it Risky

Do the paperwork now and let the car go. This means the buyer will be buying the car with no MOT or V5C. The buyer could then play smart and apply for a V5C and pay £25 to do this, and if they're quick enough they get to keep your plate

Playing it straight

Explain to your buyer that you've been a bit of a tt forgetting to swap plates, and that they will have to wait until you sort the paperwork

I did a recent plate change. MOT and tax came back on day 7, V5C on day 8

You can go to one of the main DVLA offices and change the plate before Wednesday. I have used the office at Old Trafford Manchester several times.

No you can't, that's only when assigning a plate, not removing it. As said above it takes about 3 weeks.
