A couple of mates and I are discussing the possibility of buying a barge and driving it across Europe. We're all 21 so insurance is a bit of an issue however I personally can insure something like a 730i or 4.2 A8 for a low enough price that it'd be feasible to do so for a few weeks

So - what barge would you recommend for storming across Europe in? Needs to be reasonably reliable although I guess with a maximum £1000 budget you take what you get rofl

LWB XJ6? Honda Legend? Trying to think outside of the German box because I think more will be available for the money.

Ever thought about a Land Rover Discovery V8?

Should find a half decent one with an alright head gasket.

Me and some mates managed to do over 500 miles in one with a completely destroyed head gasket all in the name of charity. Had to give up so nursed it home with the engine running on what sounded like 14 litres of water and a bit of oil,

Fully serviced and ready to go (if slightly over budget!)

As for mileage it's hardly run in for one of these, plenty toys too smile

Could you get a Lexus LS400 for this price? Admittedly it may be a bit ropey with a few dents and a few of the electrics might not work but the basic components of these cars are tank like and they are very very comfy and smooth.

You'd be very, very surprised. Many LS coming up at the £1000 mark

Saab 9-5s are cracking value and plenty comfortable for a Euro trip. Should be able to get something around 10 years old..

Yep, a whole £175.

You never heard of haggling?!

There are some great roads that you'll want something a little more chuckable for, but still comfortable and cruisy enough for the long slogs.

I just bought a 1993 Mercedes W124 400E. Super durable machine. Feels indestructable. It has new ball joints, bushes bearings, brakes, dampers and next to zero rust despite surviving many 18 chicago winters and salt. Was cheap for here which means it would be cheaper in Europe.
Unfortunately you can't get those over there.

I wouldn't sneeze on that 2 litre Nissan. The title says stormer!!!

Sorry, had too many Carling Chrome's to try them out so never understood what you were getting at smile

I'm sure the Lexus would do a good job for the money though.

Garlick had one for a while and loved his IIRC. It should be top of the list for the OP IMO. (Old BMWs have crap seats)

I watched Mike Brewer buy one on Wheeler Dealer's earlier which brought it to my attention! Don't know why but I'd really like one.

The Nissan Maxima was mentioned earlier, I'm sure that'd do the job too in a reliable fashion but if the 2 litre is a V6 then I think it'd be typically hard work if fully laden?

I bought one for £575 last year (See my profile) - Put some winters on it & used it for a few months, then as soon as the sun started being more frequent it just sat around. Sold for £250 for scrap...I had no takers for it as soon as the MOT/TAX expired even though it was faultless. C'est la vie. Great cars, you can't go wrong with them.

Just not my cup of tea though, prefer an XJ every time having finally scratched the LS itch.
