The quest for under-bonnet heat reduction continues.............

Does anyone have any experience of ceramic coating their headers??

May be worth a look over on Chimp Forum as I know quite a few
of my members with Chimps have had them done.

If you don't get any joy then PM me and I will put you in touch with one of them

I've had my manifolds coated but have not started the SEAC as yet .. but it will be soon.

One of the guys with a V8 Tuscan road racer had his coated and was unhappy with the finish after
a few months..

They look lovely mate..It may be a good way to go as its proven to reduce engine bay temperatures..Us poor folk would be more incline to use lagging and heat proof paint.. frown..
But if you got it!! Flaunt it!!..

It's more usual to use the term 'headers' when referring to motorcycle pipes, for some reason.

A rose by any other name is still a rose. wink

Ceramic coating is great, when done properly. When done outside (and hopefully inside) it keeps the exhaust heat inside the manifolds and/or pipes and therefore lowers the engine bay and cockpit temperatures AND by increasing the heat inside the system, it speeds up the exhaust flow..which is a power builder.

Unlike exhaust wrappings, it does not encourage and hasten rusting. As a matter of fact, if done when new, it will prevent rust. With an exhaust that is not too far gone, with a thorough sandblasting of old manifolds, it can be applied and save the system for many years. It permits the rustless use of mild steel rather than stainless steel. Stainless is brittle, mild steel is flexible. The coating itself is very durable..you can even hit it with a hammer.

It is VERY popular in NA and Downunder. Elsewhere, it is confused with metalizing, which is an aesthetic move only. It is far more than that. The biggest problem outside these continents is the price. It is 3 times the price in the UK. Is that the environmental law?

Many people go for a chrome look. This is achieved by mixing aluminum dust in with the ceramic and then polishing. The problem with that look is that the aluminum lowers the maximum temperature the finish can withstand without going opaque..figure about 500C rather than 750C. A V8 driven robustly will be heat significantly over 500C, so after a few months, people who opted for the chrome look for the wrong reasons get disappointed. The pipes can still be polished but they will never look as shiny as they were at the outset.

The colored ceramic is cheaper, has the same benefits and will not discolor until the temperature is MUCH higher.

I know two places that will do this work in the UK.

Another thumbs up for ceramic coating from myself. I had manifolds to tailpipe coated inside and out in satin black, that was about six years ago, it still looks great but the reason I had it done was for the temperature reduction in the engine bay and inside the car. It worked very well, in fact so well I have started using the interior heater when its cold, the previous 17 years the heater was left turned firmly off!

The only downside IMO is the cost, eye watering, but worth it.

Chris.

Well I think I'm convinced that ceramic coating my headers AND my manifolds hehe its the way to go but I have 2 issues, 1. Mine are so rusty I'm wondering if they're past investing more money on and 2. I haven't found anyone in NZ that actually does the coating yet!

Thanks for your comments

Many places in Oz. For NZ look at

HPC (High performance Coatings) in http://tinyurl.com/6wlcn9p
or
Procoat http://www.procoat.co.nz/

Their prices are reasonable.

np. Just remember, the "chrome" look will not last more than a few drives..a bit longer if you coat both inside and out. If the rust isn't bad, they can also do used parts after a thorough sandblasting. When you think about that, it is cheaper to coat parts than buy new ones. The result is better aesthetically, performance and temperature wise.
