Every night on my way home I see at least one car without headlights, often more. Me and others flash headlights or rear fogs and still they don't react.

It's an observation more than anything, but I wonder if it's related to the fact that newer cars have backlit dials all the time, and the driver thinks the headlights are on? Anyway, it seems to be happening more regularly than ever these days, sadly.

Ive been noticing this more and more recently. If I'm honest it really Grinds My Gears. How can someone honestly not realise that they don't have their lights on? Surely the lack of a beam of light lighting up the road ahead is a clear indicator? It just proves lack of total awareness. These people are so unaware of their own car it makes me shudder at the thought of how unaware they may be to whats going on around them.

The people that have their half lights on in the dead of the night and actually believe that they have their full beams on must just be oblivious. I don't think it has to do with the Dash being constantly backlit..... banghead Almost as bad as the numpties that drive around blinding everyone with their High Beams on !! How can they honestly not see the High Beam Dash light?????

Think we must just assume they are all Idiots and try avoid them at all costs. The sad thing is that eventually one of these idiots may hurt someone.

I found the trick with those approaching you is to flick to sidelights then back to dipped beam. Then they get it

As Garlick says, I think the problem could be related to backlit dials that are lit up all of the time. You do still get a indicator that your lights are on though (as well as the visual one).

See lots of cars with just the DRL's on too.

Another things is cars with only sidelights on, and of course cars with sidelights and front fog lights, but no headlights.

DRL's are on all the time, so that's the same as driving without any lights switched on.

I agree that it's probably due to permanently lit instruments.

In the old days (ah....) you would know if you had your lights on because if you didn't and it was dark you couldn't read your speedo, but now many dashboards are a riot of lights all the time! I can never tell if the C4's lights are on (even worse - they have an auto setting!).

Sigh. You are so right. Yet another thing for feckwits to get wrong.

And why don't DRLs switch off when NRLs (which you might also refer to as "headlights") are switched on?

I find that crashing into them alerts them to the situation.

I would guess this is right I never realised that there are cars with instraments that light up with out the lights on until I followed my mate in a corsa in the rain he was so used to driving his MINI which doesn't do it. Also know what ou mean about Auto lights the golf ahas them and I have to remeber when I'm in the Mini that I have to switch the lights on myself

Has it got worse since auto headlights? I think they definitely have something to do with it, especially if someones usual car has them and occaisionally drives a car without.

Well, it had to happen. This morning, I spotted my first car with a blown DRL. Driver's side working, passenger side out. A 61-plate Jaguar XF, bizarrely enough.
