I'm struggling to find a property to buy in the location I want within my budget that includes a garage.

I've checked with my insurance company and they say that any car valued over £20k has to be garaged in order to be insured with them (car is valued at £21k). The garage that looks after my car suggested that the car was worth maybe £24k.

So, is it worth the risk of insuring my car for £19.5k and getting myself an outdoor car cover? Or try harder to find a property with a garage?

I know there are a lot of if's and but's but it's on my mind and just wanted some advice to help out.

nb: The insurers value of the car (£21k) is not an agreed value, they'd still use market value to value the car if the worst were to happen.

Can you maybe find a house then rent a garage somewhere nearby?

I don't think your wee beastie is worth £24k, realistically I'd say in the summer it is worth what you paid for it. Mine probably isn't worth £24k (All IMO). However, going for a £19k agreed value will make what? £1-3k difference to your pocket should it be stolen. Your choice really. Can't you change insurers newt year? (maybe before you move).

I wouldn't want to leave this kind of car on the street, but there is no reason why not, its only a car. I'd certainly prefer a parking space outside my front door so I can put a cover on it/run a charging/vacuum cleaner power lead to it when needed.

To be honest I was surprised to hear it was worth £24k, took it with a pinch of salt if I'm honest but was still nice to hear.

If I can't find a property with a garage then I wouldn't settle of anything other than offstreet parking with a preference for my own driveway. I couldn't sleep at night if my p&j were on a street corner. I've read too many horror stories on here for me to do that.

The location i'm looking to buy in is right in the centre of a city so doubt there are many garages nearby such as a garage en block, but I'll have a look.

The insurers value of the car is not an agreed value, that's the part that concerns me as my potential loss is not capped at £1-3k as you suggested.

I do think £24k is a tad ambitious although it looks good for owners of similar!

My fully comp insurance is based on parking on the drive and is just over £300 - try Henderson Taylor.

Do you use a car cover? Is it a pita to use?

Yes I use a cover and it is fine to use - I have posted a few bits about it here in the past.

I think in your own mind, and peace of mind, you ain't gonna settle at night without your p&j tucked in at night. Live somewhere else with a garage!!

Do you have to wash the car before you put the cover on everytime you go out. Or does it depend how dirty the car is?

I tend to give it a quick detail if it needs it before covering although it never really gets that dirty! The cover I have is very kind to it and doesn't seem to be a problem if the car is a bit damp when covered.

I'd personally want a driveway at the very least.
Like others 24k is a tad optimistic for a 2003 car but not impossible. My 54 plate (targa with rebuild and full hide) is worth less than that, though I was offered 20k as a p/ex and 22k as a private sale.

My Tamora lives on the street in central London. It does get the odd ding but at £400 a month to rent a garage I could get it resprayed annually instead!

You will need to shop around to get insurance though.

For me its either having the car and it living on the street or not having it - an easy choice.

Edited to address the question: I'd be a bit wary of 'undervaluing' the car for insurance purposes since companies can get a bit funny about this. Its not only about trying to cap their liability. Find a different insurer.
