Just been looking at a pic of the Tamora - you know it really has grown on me, I like it a lot more than when it was new.

The front number plate looks really awkward, bet it would look miles better without a number plate.

Anyone tried running a car without a front number plate? I've seen a few. How long did you get away with it? And what were the consequences when plod finally caught up?

You could stick a sticker plate on the bonnet to change the overall look?

Small fine is the outcome = but it is there for a reason

Sticker plate - True, although I think that's illegal too.

There for a reason - well I presume so but motorbikes don't have them.

I have a stick on,bonnet mounted, slightly modified spacing, type number plate on my Chim.
Have not (yet!) been stopped for it,and engine cooling is improved.
Jury's still out on its overall aesthetic affect but
who's going to be the first to fk up a Tamoras looks as well ?

Could it damage the paint when you take it off?

Are they a bit stretchy to allow for the curves in the bonnet?

I know of someone who had a Griff with no front plate - looks nice - but surely only a matter of time before he hits Plod. A missing numberplate is an offence and technically a fine of up £1,000, though I think they allow you one trip to get it fixed. Which is lucky, 'cos if they catch you with an illegally-spaced plate, they can confiscate it - and thereby make you commit another offence. Heads they win, tails you lose...

Stick-on numberplates seem to be a grey area - but I've heard that if you change your mind, yes, they damages the paint.

Judicious use of hot water removed the first stick on (stuck on lob sided first go)plate i tried.
BTW, Bauer Millet in Manchester have Peter Wheelers ex 450 SEAC (proper kevlar bodied one) for sale- the ultimate wedge?

JohnL,

I had an MX-5 for 3 years before the TVR, and had no front number plate on it for the last 2 years.

I carried it behind the seat, and on the (surprisingly few) number of times I was pulled up i'd just act very apologetic and say that it had fallen off a couple of days previously and that I hadn't got around to getting some sticky fixers to stick it back on with. A bit of grovelling, and a few "yes, i know i should have done it sooner"s and they let me off every time.

I should point out that they were few and far between as well. I think I was pulled about 3 times specifically for the plate (twice when going into the City through the checkpoints which is understandable).

Mine fell off during the Easter bank holiday weekend (damned peasants) and has been off since. Every copper I have passed looks at it and doesnt do anything. I have expected to be pulled a couple of times but nothing yet [touches wood].

Well I won't be taking my front number plate off. Without it the opening on the front would look far too big and out of place.
Cheers...... Andrew

Fair enough - I haven't got one to take the plate off from, I was just looking at some pictures and the thought occurred.

'I didn't think they could do you from the front'

Sounds like a Truvelo - two parallel rubber strips across the road and a camera pointing towards you on the kerb ready to zap you if the time interval is too short. They seem to like them in Scotland. They also like hiding cameras behind road signs - beware a sign which has THREE legs instead of two...

The only car that can legally have the number plate on the bonnet is the e-type jag (some MP/Lord must have had an e-type when they were changing the legislation).

All other cars must have it fitted as normal.

I thought it was cars regsitered before 1972 (? - same age as can use white on black plates) but the E type is the only car from that era where the plate on the bonnet actually looks any good.

Could be wrong of course.

Those late 60s Marcos' with the wooden chassis look pretty good with the bonnet-mounted plates ...

Don't all Marcos have wooden chassis?

Perhaps I should have said, the only car from that era that most people have seen/would recognise where stick on plates were commonly used.
