Just had the sump pan and ZF fluid changed on the car, occasionally when the car is sat in traffic I can smell warm atf fluid.

Is it normal to have this smell after this sort of work? I cant see any leakages??

What is ZF fluid?

ATF fluid is also used in power steering pump so that could have a leak.

Is it possible some was spilled onto the exhaust when the transmission was refilled? That stuff takes an eternity to burn off completely.

Well that's what I hope, garage said to drop it back and they'll check it over. Going there tomorrow a.m.

Garage had a look and couldnt find any leak, even showed me the underside when it was on the ramp and its all dry.

Must just be some spilt fluid on the undertray getting warm...

No, it's not normal, they must have just dropped some somewhere, honestly don't know how or where...

I hope it was a transmission specialist.

It was a BMW specialist.

The parts including the fluid were from ZF (I bought them direct)

I have seen that here is no leak.

I am happy that its an odour of spilt filuid not a leak.

That is all.

OP pull the dipstick for the transmission, does the fluid smell burnt ? is it a nice red colour or on ts way to being black ?

Burnt & Black = dead/dying transmission.
