Just wondered, as I don't know if they are all just normal autos or not. If they do exist, are they any good and do they change gear when you tell them to?

I think they are all normal Auto's with a manual mode and the paddle shift function is just something that you can retrofit. The earlier boxes had W and S modes and the later 7G boxes had three modes Sport, Comfort and Manual. Not sure the manual gives you full control though I always assumed the ECU took control when it wanted

AMG stuck with the older 5sp auto up until around 5 years ago possibly less, so not likely

Even the slr has the 5 speed auto.
Buttons/ paddles does it make that much of a difference?

I have a C55 with AMG "Speedshift!" Which is basically a 5 speed auto with a manual steering wheel control which will hold all the gears, but sometimes will change down at the most annoying time.. However I would have it over a manual on that car. Thought it would detract at first but now believe it certainly suits the car.

Not sure if the same speedshift system came on the older SKL or C32's - sure somebody on the merc forums would know.

I didn't realise they had "shift buttons". They look like they might not be the easiest things to reach while driving though! WHy would they not just fit paddles as standard?

shift buttons aren't right up, left down, they are both up and down depending on where you press them.

The shift buttons are perfect... When I got mine I thought they would have to be changed to paddles but no need. If there good enough in the SLR there good enough to me!

Have a read of the E55 AMG thread before you decide on a "cheap" AMG.

Cheap short term fixes by previous owners etc...

.... and the stick in the middle is left and right for up and down, rather than the conventional forwards and backwards .. Why?

To be fair. Now PH high Command has ruined the Classifieds with their "the old system is simple to use, lets completey fk it up with graphics that rotate and a interface that is completley unfathomable" ste.

Ther'll be more and more threads like this as people simply cannot find the car they are looking for hehe

I have a C350 with the 7G (2006 W203 with 272bhp). Its not a bad box TBH. I just leave it in comfort and stick it in manual when I want to push on. The buttons behind the wheel allow fast changes and will skip a couple if you hold it down. It will change up at the line too which is handy.

Even in sport or comfort you can use the buttons to over ride full auto mode.

Not sure about AMG models for under £7K though.
