Short term car insurance vs. cancelling policy early

Likely to be getting another car from a private seller, thereby wanting to get rid of my usual hack shortly afterwards.

What's usually the best way of sorting out insurance so that you can still drive the old one to be able to sell it / take people out to test drive it?
