Hi All,

The MIL wants a auto Mini and I will stay away from the CVT ones.
I believe they went from CVT to 'normal auto' (torque converter)in 2005/06 because of major issues with the cvt.

How can I tell from looking at adverts if it is CVT or not - any tell tale signs like lack of paddles on steering for non-cvt, different looking gearstick etc?

Calling the sellers is not much help as they seem not know for sure (purposely or not I am not sure!).

I am looking at cheaper cares so around the 2005/06 period hence it is more of an issue as that is when the changeover happened I believe.

I think I'm right in saying that the One and Cooper are CVT, the CooperS is 'proper' auto....

Think the face lift minis R56 were fitted with conventional auto (2007 model year). The convertable kept the CVT until it's face lift 2009?

My wifes r56 cooper has paddles on steering wheel.

From memory, All R50/R52s have CVT autos. The R53 was always a 6 speed steptronic transmission.

R56's came with a 'proper' auto.

Is this steptronic another way of saying semi-auto/SMG. By that I mean automated manual?

No, sorry! Better explanation below

All Mini One's and Cooper's Automatics built between Launch and September 2006 (R50/R52 demoninations) were CVT. Since the R56 model was launched, they swapped to a fully automatic 6 speed box with manual and sport mode.

All Mini Cooper S Automatics built between Launch and today are fully automatic with manual and sport mode.
