Ranger Rover Sport - which one is the best spec
Discussion
Hi Guys,
Very basic question. I am looking at a RRS as something with a bit more space than my usual everyday drivers. I've clicked on the classifieds and 800+ are for sale! I don't overly want to buy something for 50k thats worth 25k in 2 years and this really will just be a very nice addition. I am thinking 25k-35k price. I am guessing from what little I have read the V8 diesel is the one to go for. Is the petrol one really that bad? Some that drive past me at work sound fantastic, is the amazing exhaust note only available on the petrol versions with sports exhausts?
The bit that I am unsure on is that I see some examples drive by that look absolutely stunning and others that look bland but I am struggling to recognise what the subtle differences are. So have there been many modifications over the years. I have seen various between 2006-2010 models that look nice.
Are there any must haves and must avoids etc. So many different types of alloys too, etc. Any help and guidance would be good. I appreciate it's a bit of a vague opening question but I'd be grateful for any help.
Cheers

Diesel engines detailed below - I will ignore petrol varants unless asked for further info....
TDV6 launched in 2005 with 2.7 single turbo unit - Avoid early cars.
TDV8 launched in 2007 with 3.6 twin turbo unit - these should be ok and is a lovely engine with a decent exhaust note.
TDV6 3.0 unit launched in 2009 for 2010 model year. At this point the 2.7 unit dropped and the 3.6 TDV8 dropped soon after, although there are a few 2010 model year TDV8's about.
Not much point in the TDV8 now - as the 3.0 is not far off the pace and more economical. New 4.4 Diesel unit introduced in the Full Size Range Rover, but will not fit (at the moment) in the Sport Chassis.
Big changes for 2010 model year in Comms. Much better nav/sound and bluetooth stuff in these cars.
2012 Model year now with us - new car has 10BHP more, 8 speed gearbox and one piece power tailgate. Comms are improved again with bluetooth streaming, say what you see, dual view etc available.
Good car, I will reiterate my earlier point - BUY AS LATE A CAR AS YOU CAN!
HSE is the specification to go for - pretty much forget everything else unless you spot an HST or a Stormer worth the money.

HST = the worst factory bodykit ever
HSE = all the toys on the TDV8, the TDV6 lacks a few like poss adaptive cruise and some other 'essentials'
Stormer = not sure
Autobiography = 2011/2012 run of shiny chrome bits with all the toys
And not for the first time heres a site I found invaluable

Go for a 2010MY without question.
If I were you, look for a 2010MY or newer 5.0 Supercharged HSE. They come fully loaded and the sting has come out of the initial depreciation now they are 2 years+ old. You will still have about a year on the manufacturers warranty as well.
Go for one in Santorini black or Stornoway grey grey, yum! IMHO, the Autobiography models are pig ugly and a bit too gangsta.

IMO the HST is just vulgar!
The V8 diesel has a wonderful exhaust note...
If you're only doing small miles then the V8 supercharged (petrol) does become a viable option.
Both are great to drive. The supercharged is a more revvy engine which wants to be worked hard where as the v8 diesel is a more lazy drive.

Is that a petrol or diesel? Do they super charge both the petrol and diesel? If I were you, look for a 2010MY or newer 5.0 Supercharged HSE. Whats the mpg like on the supercharge petrol? Compared to the v8 diesel, is it a bit of a joke? The V8 diesel has a wonderful exhaust note...

1) You say avoid early TDV6 cars - why is that ? What problems did they have that say a 2007/08 TDV6 didn't ?
2) You say buy as late model as you can. In this situation, which is better, a low mileage earlier model (say 35k mile 2007 TDV8) or a high mileage later model (say a 60k mile 2008) ?

As always, it depends how you drive them. The supercharged gives approx 17mpg, the TDV8 gives approx 27mpg.
There's nothing wrong with the early 2.7 TDV6, it's just that pickup can be slower than what you might like. The later 3.0 TDV6 has a 37% increase in power & was introduced at the end of 2009, together with a bit or an update to the model (suspension, dash, facelift, etc...).
Anyway, stop asking questions, get out there & test drive some!!

No!Petrol = Supercharged
Diesel = Turbocharged
4.2 V8 = Supercharged
5.0 V8 = Supercharged
2.7 TDV6 = Single turbo (Dawg!)
3.0 TDV6 = Twin Sequential turbo
3.6 TDV8 = Single turbo (one on each side, mind you!)
So either go for a 2010MY+ 3.0 TDV6 HSE or a 2010MY+ 5.0 V8.

When the Sport was launched we had nowhere near the funding that we have now from TATA, so the quality of the build on very early cars was not great - air suspension issues - electronics issues - front ball joints (which they tried to blame on Overfinch Alloys when they were fitted - but in all honesty they went anyway!). Practise makes perfect - the longer they built them the better they got. 1) You say avoid early TDV6 cars - why is that ? What problems did they have that say a 2007/08 TDV6 didn't ?

TBF any early car would have had to have had these issue sorted by now anyway.
Regarding your second point I would say it depends on the mileage that you are going to do - I would probably go for the later car with the mileage that I do. You should not have too many issues with TDV8 anyway.

(They weren't made for long)

(They weren't made for long)

Unless MPG is not an issue. A well sorted 5.0 S/C is a great car.
