My E92 M3 has come (from a dealer I might add) fitted with pilot sport * on the front (new) and a pair of 3.5-4mm pilot sport N1's on the rear, i know from my previous 911's that these are porsche secific, according to the Michelin book these are "not recommend" (in bold red) to be fitted to anything else. Am I right to ask the dealer to change these?

Grip is frankly shocking, slightest hint of a damp road and the rears will light up at 70 in a straight line, seems a bit much, I've had Tuscans and 55amg'scwith more grip!

Yes
My Porsche had an MOT advisory for having BMW tyres fitted.

Although if it was against the 'law' then it would have been a fail and not an advisory.

That's the thing, obviously it's not illegal, just not recommended by the manufacturer, wouldn't imagine I have any kind of legal stance but I do think it poor form from a main dealer.

Yes, but it is still a very good reason to get the dealer to change them.

I would speak to them. Might not be illegal but definately not recommended, and not what you would expect from a BMW approved used car.

Porsche 'N' rated tyres should be fitted to Porsches and nothing else. All the other manufacturer fitments are interchangable and can be fitted to other vehicles without problem.

What I've posted above is definately written down somewhere as I've read it. Try some of the manufacturers websites, or do a search on google.

What's the difference between a Porsche Michelin and a "normal" Michelin?

From what the o/p has said - grip! Surprised that there would be much difference to be honest.

AIUI, the N spec means Porsche Approved, not Porsche Designed. So there should be no issues with them on any other car.

This was the same with Michelin When the Ford Focus Mk1 came out as it had Michelin 225/40/18 PS1's fitted the BMW M3 had the same tyre but after the rim size on the tyre wall it had a * and N1 which meant apparently it was a tyre designed for a car with Traction Control. This is what Michelin told me whether this is a fact or not I dont know

So the Porsche would have no grip then?

I haven't used these tyres - the Porsches I've driven have always had great grip. Maybe a different grip level because there is more weight on the rear tyres of a Porsche? Pure conjecture smile

Michelin produce specific tyres for the M3 classed as 'extra load' and carry the * symbol.

Given that the dealer should have performed the AUC and replaced the tyres before selling it, I'd recommend you report them to BMW UK. I've read an increasing number of bad practices from main dealers of late......money must be tight.
