Well next week the public service are going on strike/ having a holiday

Treat it as you want.

Anyway it looks like the border agency are looking for civil servants to man the posts of the scowling people.

So would you happily take a day off next week and volunteer to do a public service job for the day so the strike is even more ineffective.

I would i'd happily empty bins for a day, i might even empty some into the bin lorry

In the case of the UKBA, a few of these would do the job just as well...

As a contractor on a public sector site, I sometimes feel like I'm covering certain people's jobs everyday anyway... The strike will make no difference to me, in fact I might be a bit more productive at my own work than usual hehe

I find it interesting that of the union members here going on strike, very few say they will be on a picket line... rolleyes

How bizarre, I was thinking the same thing this morning as I drove my son to nursery.

I would definitely volunteer a day of my time - and I'm self employed too so it would cost me a days wages - because I think most public sector strikes are utterly without justification.

In my industry, the public sector jobs now pay the best rates and offer (even after cuts) the best pensions. My wife is in the NHS and she says the same is true there; salaries and pensions are so much better than they were 10 years ago, and easily match private rates.

I will point out this is not a thread about the UKBA so don't concentrate on that set of scowly clowns

On my terms, sure. My terms involve lots of money my way, and little in the way of productivity, so no different to the striking jobsworths really, except I'm far more expensive.

My hope is that by finding suitable cover for these public sector jobs at short notice it will become abundantly clear that in many cases the "years of training and experience" we hear so much about can actually be imparted in about 10 minutes flat.

You would probably have to have strikes lasting numerous weeks to have a noticeable effect on some services.

Exactly this.

It will be sodding hilarious if the main outcome of this strike is to demonstrate that large swathes of the public sector can be replaced by managers' children and a 15 minute training course with no discernible detrimental effects.

yes

They're not exactly precision engineers or top scientific minds are they? It's why I'm always surprised that binmen, cleaners, admin staff etc think they can strike without fear of losing their jobs.

Channel Tunnel for me please. Although I'm actually going through there the next day so maybe not quite such a good idea. scratchchin

Put me down for Dover docks instead.

as far as the ukba is concerned...they are getting embassy workers from abroad who are experienced in UK visa interviews and passport/visa checks. That is a good move in terms of covering the border posts. Nice one!

Lets sort out the teachers and others. one day of not picking up the bins is not a big deal.
