'84 XJS 3.6 Manual - Gearbox Question
Discussion
Hi Matt,
I believe your gearbox is a Getrag 265. I've an '89 XJ40 Sovereign 3.6 manual which has the same AJ6 engine and 'box.
They're becoming rare and are quite sought after for XJS V12 manual conversions, Jaguar racers, etc. They can cost around £500 used but sometimes cheaper ones come up, here's an ebay item: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/jaguar-getrag-5-speed-ge...
They are regarded as very strong so only tend to break if exposed to serious abuse or neglect. I found fifth difficult to engage on my car when I first aquired it, on inspection I found the inner rubber gaitor to be interfering with the cut-out in the "ski-slope" wood panel that surrounds the gear lever.
I recently had my box serviced and a new clutch fitted, it cost more than the car is worth, that's not difficult though!
