my cobra build is at the stage that i asked dvla for a chassis number, just a note on note pad paper, sure enough two days later new number plus other forms for when i want iva plus registration. if you are near ready for a chassis number make sure you write the make and model as thats what will appear with the chassis number. my car is not a kit therefore no kit manufacturer name like dax or such.

That is very timely- this is where I have got to with my build. I had yet to look into getting a chassis number, where do you request a number from- is this your local DVLA office? thanks Ben

If you have built your own chassis you can create your own chassis number as long as it is 17 characters long.

You can also create your own make and model as long as the name does not infer it is something else.

If you want DVLA to alocate one then a visit to your local DVLA office is all that should be required. I'm surprised they sent one through the post to the OP as the numbers normally come from a register held at each local office.

Nothing surprises me with the DVLA.

They chop and change as it suits them. Some of the daft registrations I have seen over the years with Kit Cars are just silly. Q Reg Robin Hood registered BY THE DVLA as a FORD not a Ford nut or bolt in it all Triumph.

Properly registered pre SVA/IVA not a fiddle, not the builders fault and the DVLA see no reason to change it. Just one example there are dozens more.

i walked into my local dvla office and because it was busy i jotted a quick letter stating i would like a chassis number and gave the name of my car ie make and model. because i built my own chassis and just bought a body shell i gave it my initials as make and cobra as model. i wanted a dvla issued chassis number as i will be iva ing it and feel that if i choose to sell in the future being all government issued will be more acceptable in the market place. a couple of days later a letter came through from the local office with cahssis number and all forms required for registation and iva forms.
