Morning chaps
Going to put a new cam in the 5.0 chim. Can anyone advise me what would be the highest lift I can go for without having to relieve the head or pistons.
And an idea which cam that would be.
Thanks

This is about the biggest you can fit with no mods http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Rover-V8-Crane-Cams-9013...

Barrie.
The 5.0 heads are quite good but while you have them off, you should send them to V8D for an upgrade.

You then can use a cam with at least 0.50 lift.

I am using a Tornado copy by Kent cams and with a few other bits, achieve 346/360 brake/torque.

"Effective RPM 5200 to 8200."

Maybe not so good for a std 500... hehe

Methinks cam choice restrictions might not be the bottleneck for this engine, then. wink

Those effective rpm figures always seem to be based on basic 3.5 engines, they are far less relevant in relation to the capacity, CR and breathing when put in the better TVR engines. Pinch of salt please.

Highest lift isn't a problem with the pistons, the pistons are relieved to avoid contact at partial openings which depends far more on the ramp profile & timing rather than the total lift (and remember the longer stroke of the 500 means there is even more clearance than 400's + better CR's! due to the simple geometric changes of the stroke). The max lift is really dictated by the valve train, mainly the top of the valve stem (and particularly the seal) which generally the TVR BV heads are already worked for, but you can get some different seals which are shorter so that you may be able to cut down the stem even further although then you would probably be having to look at alternate springs top avoid coil binding if you were wanting to go to something like .6". Standard 500 head components are probably fine for nearly .55" IIRC.
