My OH is soon to start a new job which will hopefully attract a shiny new company car.

I should imagine she will be entitled to a 'good' car so this should see her into a C-class/3 series/A4 etc but what is out there at the moment which will prove to be good value as well as a nice place to be.

So far I've suggested;

C-Class
Q5
Tiguan
Freelander
TT

Currently she is driving a Fiat 500 which she loves to bits, however for the mileage she will be doing in the future it won't be nearly suitable enough.

Advice on how to 'negotiate' the package with the new employer also appreciated!

320d efficient dynamics by a country mile on my co car list. Low co2 means tax is much lower than equivalent Audi etc. Mondeo and insignia also quite a bit higher, all this was6 months ago.

errrr...perhaps apart from the most basic C Class, that list would all be pretty high-end (from a cost point of view) company cars.

Just what level of job has she got?

Bear in mind company car tax is levied on a combination of emissions and list price, so the SUVs will be fairly horrendous, especially if she's a 40% tax payer (and if she's not, she ain't getting that level of car!).

Look forward to the touring version next year! From April the tax rules change again, 115g Co2 or lower 13%! Currently its set at 120g Co2! So alot of people will worse off unfortantly.

It's within the pharmaceutical industry she will be working, I'd say the level she will be classed as will be 'decent', certainly enough IMO to attract 3 series etc.

Or would it be better simply accepting a monthly figure from the company and sorting out a lease deal?

This malarkey is all new to us!

Does she have a cash option?

How many business miles?

Fuel card?

Bloody minefield...oh yes!

The days of having a "fun" company car are long gone, for most people IMO.

Good luck though.

Skoda Superb if budget is up to 20K

My current budget is 16.5K and for that ammount of money, the superb is as far as I can tell by far the best value for money out there.

A 3 series 320d is pretty cheap to lease as a company car - a long way away from something like a Q5!

What to do for the best is way more complicated than it appears at first glance, but it's totally pointless agonising about it until you know what's going to be offered. Unless it's a tiny company, they'll have this sort of thing pretty well organised and there's little flexibility otherwise running company car schemes becomes a complete nightmare.

Basically when you get the quotes for the Tig, FL and Q5 you'll think they've quoted a Maybach compared to the BMW and eco mercs or VWs. Anything like that you pay through the nose for on a co. car scheme. You'll basically be in the same position as everyone else, the BMW will be the best and cheapest car and if you go for anything else it'll be because you hate BMWs or have cash to burn.

As has been said, the 320D is filthy cheap if you're a 20% taxpayer.

Can't remember the exact figures but it is around £60 a month, not including a fuel card which unfortunately my company does not offer.

Makes sense really.

You do not really want a fuel card (personal mileage one) unless you do shedloads of private mileage though.

Yeah I heard the Skoda Superb is a great company car! Good looking, VAG engines, loadsa bits from Golf, Passat and suprisingly cheap anyway for the size of the car!

I know but I'm having fun choosing the new car, albeit at a ridiculously early stage! biggrin

When it comes to negotiating the overall package I think it's best to have as much knowledge as possible so she isn't short changed in anyway.

Just get a copy of Whatcar and compare the car tax payable on the Freelander in comparison to the 320d ED and you won't even consider a 4x4. If you do still want a 4x4 then an X3 may be a good option. Last company car I had was a 330d Msport that cost in excess of £260pcm in Tax alone.

For cost effective motoring the choices are 320d ED or 520d ED.

BMW have been miles ahaed of the competition for years when it comes to company cars, although the others are starting to catch up slowly.

Try here for an accurate assessment of Tax Costs for both cars and fuel cards. www.comcar.co.uk

I'm at a 'reasonable' level and my allowance would get me into a 135i, 330d touring and a Z4 28i, all quite easily. I can get a 330d M Sport Plus coupe, just (it's literally pence away from my limit). But it won't get me anything bigger than a '20d if I look at the 5 series.

On Mercs, C350CDI easily if saloon or estate, but C250 CDI coupe is over my allowance...if I look at Audis I can only get a A4 TDI170 (3 litre cars are all way over my allowance) and all the Q5s except a basic SE143 are over my allowance.

You mentioned a TT. The 2WD TFSI is supposed to be really good and it is quite reasonable from a company car tax perspective too. In fact, it is probably the cheapest car (taxwise) that can offer 0-60 in 6s performance. I seriously considered the basic 'sport' version and buying an old estate car for family use as a second car. Seemed a bit selfish though!

Basically it is all down to the pricing discounts that the manufacturer is offering the lease company, and the residuals of the cars, that will drive the monthly rate you are charged.

I know from private purchasers that Merc are giving away C Classes at the moment (I've heard of sub-300 a month contract hire rates on the C250).

Best thing is to ask for a copy of the car policy and the rate list once you have confirmation that a car will be included in the deal.

As a rough guide, once you get to cars costing 35k or more it begins to look cheaper to take the cash and contract hire personally, assuming you aren't doing mega miles. This is due to the tax that begins to creep into 250-300 a month...but I do 40000 miles a year so the sums work out for me.

I nearly went on the BMW friends and family scheme as my brother works for Mini, but I wouldnt have been able to use the car for business use. Shame. New car every 9000 miles otherwise!

When I was looking, the following stuck out for me at least. These seemed to be best value/monthly lease/tax:

BMW 320ED
BMW 520D SE & the newer 520ED
Skoda Octavia VRS Diesel & Petrol
Skoda Superb 170 Diesel Elegance
BMW 123d Coupe
Various Mercs 125 Editions C & E Class
Passat CC Tech Sport Editions

The Skodas, Passat & Mercs seemed to have best spec including standard sat nav etc. All depends on the lease offers, which change wildly it seems month to month!

Yes, never look at the list the month after you have committed to a certain car, price always comes down.

Unless of course you are dithering on what to have, a new list comes out and the prices of the cars you were looking at have all gone up!

Sods law...
