What would be my best option for getting a car home that is going to be stored SORN for a few months?

It currently has a MOT and tax so is legal but I'd only need insurance for a day to get it to where it's going to be stored.

The hard bit - it's an import, left hand drive and I'm 21.

If Aviva will cover it, you can do a quote with them and get seven days' drive-away cover free even if you don't take out the full policy. Not sure if there's an age limit though - I did it last year (aged 24) and they were fine with it. Otherwise try Dayinsure or Tempcover - but they've both gone up loads in price recently.

I've used Aviva plenty of times for this. Not sure about the LHD thing though - although I can't imagine it'd be a problem.

I hate Aviva with a passion, severe deep hate for them.

Isn't the driveaway thing only for cars bought from participating dealers? scratchchin

If it now has tax you must insure it, not just for driving it on the road, but for all the time it's taxed. You can't have a car taxed but uninsured.

I know, I don't own the car yet and the SORN papers would be sent off the moment the garage door was closed after driving it home from the seller.

He said he's going to SORN and store it as soon as it's home.

OP, why not use something like this: http://www.rac.co.uk/day-insurance/

I'll try them for a quote. Tempcover refused to quote as soon as I put in the type of car it was (a 1985 Mercedes 190E irked)

RAC quoted £47.85 for 1 day (including £1.60 for breakdown cover hehe)

EDIT - they think it's a Manual, not Automatic, though, so I guess I'd need to call them

That's not too bad really is it? (Because of the type of car it is)

Compared with the £700 from Admiral* for 10 months, it's quite bad (although I appreciate there are admin costs in setting up a policy)

* based on the fact that it is a 1985 190 E (IMPORT) on their system, not sure if that includes the fact it's LHD or not.

Saying that, Elephant charged me £25 to add a 1.0 Suzuki Splash to my policy for a day (courtesy car), so it's not too bad really smile

Me too on the hatred thing, they have HUGELY screwed me over in the past and I would not go near them with a bargepole for a main policy... but this is just to get it home legally.

Not sure about the participating dealers thing - have a read here http://www.aviva.co.uk/driveaway/

I've already answered that you numpty wink

Are one of your parents or friends with any of the admiral group?, if so you could get them to add the car to their policy for a day and you take them with you so they can drive it back?.

Same story here - they fked me good when it came to disputed liability and a whipcash claim.

ZOLLAR - is there anything stopping me adding it to the Elephant policy for Picanto? I was told in the past I could only do that if it was off the road for repair? :S

Although only if it is a lower insurance group than your principle car...

That's what they said to me when I tried to (for reasons which have been lost in the mists of time) switch my main policy to a newly-acquired Suzuki Alto (with a pink stripe and the word "Rose" on it) and re-add my Mondeo (which was getting sold) as a temporary car.

They could, of course, have been talking bks.

No idea why they would have told you that, was it the first time you'd added a temporary car?.
